my honest guess is cockerel. but i would wait longer just to be sure. they can trick you.. but that stance is realllyyy tall.

Sometimes even then they will fool you. Everyone wants to know what sex their Silkies are as soon as possible. This breed is just too difficult to sex at a young age. Be patient.

Do hens flare their hackles at roosters? and do roosters flare their hackles at hens?

Yesterday I saw my blue silkie (gender unknown) flare her hackles at a known hen. I've seen hens do this to each other and I've seen roosters do this to each other, but I've never seen a hen and a rooster doing it to each other.

Any thoughts? Is my silkie a female?

My little Ameraucana pullet seems to be the top bird in my little flock of 7-month olds. She will square up with the cockerels, flaring her hackles, chest bumping--the whole bit. If there is a scuffle she doesn't approve of, she'll break it up and drive off the offending cockerels. She'll sometimes break up one of their clumsy attempts at breeding. She is very much a pullet although she hasn't produced an egg yet. I've seen my Polish pullets also flare their hackles at each other, just like a cockerel. They are 7.5 months old.

I have a white silkie and the breeder told me it was female but after reading lots on them some people say you can't tell until 17weeks. This one is 10 weeks old (we think).








I also have some babies i think they are now 4 weeks old and are a silkie cross pekin, but could be wrong on the breed? But you might be able to help me with age and breed?
