Silkie sick? EDIT: doing fine now! :)

You have chickens, you need poultry antibiotics, hon. Its a basic item in the chicken first aid kit. Keep her warm and safe, feed water and boiled eggs.

Do not give that poor chicken yogurt. Chickens are lactose intolerant.

What?! No.. They are not.. Chickens love yogurt. It will not hurt them. You should never feed them sugar yogurt. Only the plain unsugared kind. Don't feed it to your little one though. It's not for chicks.

Sounds respiratory. Poor thing..

Don't feel bad that you don't have anti-biotics for her. Not everyone gives their chickens anti-biotics. Even still, they won't help against respiratory issues. Best bet is to give her some AVC (apple cider vinegar) in her water. If she will not drink, I've heard of using a dropper. This could also go into her lungs..

Honestly.. being truly honest. She may not make it through the night. She looks very sick.

To be fair, I looked this up online about the yogurt.
It is true that chickens don't digest lactose well but that doesn't mean they are intolerant. Intolerance means there is gas build up, pain and diarrhea associated with lactose ingestion. If you've never seen a change in your bird's behavior or stools after yogurt administration I wouldn't worry too much just make sure it is more of a treat than a main part of their diet.

I know. I'm really sorry to be the one to tell you that. She just looks so sick.. Her eyes even look sick.

I cried for days after losing my first one. Same with the second one. It's very very hard. We are here for you if you need advice.

She may make it as well. I just want you to be prepared for the worst. Tomorrow I would go to your local tractor store or farm store and ask what to do for medication for a young bird that is having difficulty breathing with a runny nose.

I am vaccinating my birds in a couple of days for ILT. The symptoms sound like your girl. It is free for anyone around here. They are coming to vaccinate all 20 of my birds.

Thanks for the help. Will rice vinegar work?
Oh and, do you think it's contagious?

I don't think that's the same beneficial thing..

What about sugar water? I hope someone else chimes in! I don't know if that would help with this sort of thing. Someone recommended it to me before, but it didn't help the situation.

Do not touch any of the other chicks after touching your girl. It could be contagious. Was your hands really well after holding her.

Have you wiped her nose? Try to clear as much of the blockage you can. Is her chest congested? You could run a really hot shower to help her breathe. Think of ways you would naturally treat a baby human with a breathing issue..

I would check all the other chicks over (after hands are washed and clothing changed) to see if any others have symptoms of runny noses. Not a good sign in the first place.
