Silkie Standard of Perfection

Quote:
ALL chickens have silver and/or gold genes; silver and gold are different variations (alleles) of the same gene. Males have two copies: either 2 copies of silver, two of gold or one silver & one gold. Females only have one copy of this gene: either silver or gold.

Melanizer genes are what prevent colour from showing in the hackles, regardless of whether a bird carrys silver or gold. The e-allele of the bird also makes a difference.

Thanks for explaining that!

I love learning about genetics!

omg they are all beautiful .. how on earth do you keep them so perfectly feathered and clean and they just look like fluff balls!!!! id put it in a bubble wrap cage..haha

I've never done shows before but I wanted to enter one of my boys, because I thought it'd be a neat experience...but I'm not sure he'd meet some of the standards or even compare to any of the birds I've been seeing in these pictures, they're all gorgeous birds, my Sir Munchkin is handsome but he looks nothing like these birds..../:

When showing your birds, what is the proper way to pose them? Do you fluff the tail, and raise the beak or does the tail go down?
I pose them with a training stick, its like a pointing stick for teaching. any stick will do. I fluff tail up and tap the neck under chin to get the head back, or you could lightly tap the beak and the bird will back its head up.
