My silkie roo is a doll! He loves to be held and my six year old grandchildren carry him around. He takes care of his four ladies, is kind to the two three month old silkies & keeps my one barred rock hen & one EE hen in line! he is a busy lovable guy! the last silkie roo I had was a sweety also! So I would say go for it!
I love my silkie roo! He is the sweetest chicken we have. Talks to me when I'm in the run (kind of a coo) comes when called, I pick him up almost every day and tell him he is handsome. And it is hilarious when he crows, I laugh every time! And the little happy feet dance he does when he is trying to impress the girls.....well its adorable. I have to get it on video.
I was worried when I realized that my favorite chicken was a boy. I was afraid he would get mean and aggressive but he is as sweet as ever. Silkies rule!
. I can't remember when it was but I'm thinking Tuesday that his Buttercup cockerel hatch & pen mate beat him up. The Buttercup just started attacking him without any real warning. Can chickens get jealous?
The Silkie looked badly hurt but then seemed to act okay after being inside awhile. He panted and held his mouth open for a bit, then calmed down. He hasn't been eating or drink too much since then. I guess I'd say his appetite has been fairly good but I NEVER see him drink. I have tried dipping his beak in the water but he just takes a little sip and then shakes his head. His poo has been kind of irregular also. It was rather runny and stuck to his fluff the first two nights he was inside, and I haven't actually seen him plop out a good sized normal poo since he got attacked. He's been living inside, having the roam of the bathroom or my room during the day. Oh and a couple days after he was brought inside (once he had started to act pretty normal again) I took him back out to his pen in a transport cage and while I was opening his pen up (I had set the cage down) he just freaked out! He started jumping and hitting his head on the wire roof of the cage and then he kinda fell down and was acting all weird with his neck. I was so scared, I thought he'd broke his neck. He was holding his mouth open a lot so I rushed him back inside the house and sat down with him trying to calm him down. Today I thought he might be able to go back outside since he's been doing "okay" so I took him out there by hand and before putting him back in the pen I let him walk around out there a little. He stumbled a little when I put him down and seemed weak. He wasn't very interested in the food and he wasn't thirsty. I put him in a little cage out back and that's where he spent the day, brought him inside and after I put him down he was keeping his beak open again, almost panting. I just got home & checked on him and he's really panting. It's like 70 degrees in our house, not hot at all, so I don't understand why he's panting. There was a little poo on the towel he was on and it almost looked a little bloody
. I'm wondering if when he was attacked his lungs got injured somehow?? I'm so worried about him..I'm sorry for such a long post but if there's anything anybody can think of that might be wrong with him please post, or if you know how I might could get him to eat & drink more, I'd REALLY appreciate it, I'm going to google it also.. He's one of my little babies, about 5 months old, and sooo sweet. I can't bear the thought of losing him..
Just wanted to let everyone know that Bobbi Porto's mom passed away last night. I know there are many of you on this thread who know her and thought you would like to know.
Bobbi, if you read this, our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family!

It's hard to say. Stress can kill birds and/or supress their immune systems to the point that they get sick. I would keep him warm and give him lots of special treats to try to get him to eat. Also, I would put him on a broad spectrum antibiotic such as Tylan for 5 days.
I'm tired of looking for the original thread about the head tuck bird so I decided this was close enough. These are current pics of Head Tuck a few days ago. The one where you can see her looking towards me was because I called her name. She was a perfectly normal pullet before she got clobbered.

Head Tuck started with a head injury and for some reason it caused her head to be held differently. She has it where her beak is held straight down with her neck perfectly straight. Thing of you bending your head down without moving your neck so that your chin touches your chest, that's how Head Tuck holds hers. There are times where I have to look for her because she will hold it more normally. There might be some residual nerve damage from the blow that causes her to hold her head the way she does.
Oh goodness. I never seen anything like that! I am sure it could have permanently damaged the nerves. Can she eat and drink Ok like that?
