Silkie thread!

Need some help with a chick...I had BBS eggs hatching from someone else, along with my own Partridge. I hatched obvious blues, splash, and partridge. A week later I noticed one of the partridge chicks looked, litterally half bluish grayish, but still had the partridge look about the head and chest. The chick is now 3 weeks old and is feathering out and I'm not sure what color it is. The pic is not great..but maybe you guys can help me. I have also taken a pic of the wing. Is it a splash?

I feel the need to brag a little about what followed me home from the chicken show this past weekend.

I have some blue and splash eggs in the bator. I am hoping that they will hatch this weekend.

Does anybody here add any oil to their birds feed when conditioning for a show, etc?? I read, I think it was in the Poultry Press, about giving them some vegetable oil in their feed once or twice a week to give them extra shine/help condition their feathers.

I use olive oil or sunflower oil on their feet to ward off scaly leg. I usually give the sunflower oil in feed since it tastes better. I would not use veggie or other cheap oil. Something higher in vitamin E is better. The more oil is processed the less healthy it is so look for unrefined if it is available. Coconut oil is good too. I use that on the dogs pads and eat it on toast for myself.

I give ground flaxseed to my dog, cat, DH and me! And whole flaxseed to my horses and chickens. It is an amazing supplement. It transformed my skin, hair and nails and my animals glisten! DH's finger cracks went away too! I get whole seed at the grocery store for about $1.00/lb.

You can also give oily fish such as mackerel on an occasional basis. I've seen silkies that were fed it daily, and they literally felt and looked like "oily hair." That person has cut back dramatically on the amount (one can once per week divided between her whole flock now), and they looked and felt nice when I saw her birds a few weeks ago.

I give mine once a week in their waterer, flax seed oil and fish oil. I do this for just one day and remove the waterers and scrub. I choose this method over the feed b/c letting the oil in the feeders and in the food can make things get yucky and rancid. So I find it is easier to do the waterers since I change them daily anywhoo and then I scrub them afte with Oxine and rinse good. So far so good and no greasy bins, silkies etc..

Hope this helps
