I have another question for the silkie experts!

Are silkies good in the cold? Mine are 3 weeks tuesday and they still have the light on them which I plan leaving the light on them a few more weeks.

What is the age that you start weening your chicks off of the light. I have never had silkies but I have had regular breeds. Are they any different??

Thanks!

Where are they?? In a barn? In the house? In a coop? I would think that would affect your answer. This is my first winter hatch but my outdoor (juvies & adult) silkies have lights with a temp sensitive plug that makes sure when it gets cold, they have extra heat. I won't be putting my new babies outside for a long time but that's partially because i don't have a nice big warm barn. On the other hand, I have some black australorps that I put out in a big metal trough with lots of shavings and heat light when they were just a couple weeks old. They are doing fine.

Silkies handle very cold weather fine as long as they are dry and draft free. I reduce temperature by 5 degrees a week in the brooder until 6 weeks when they are fully feathered and move them outside into a safe coop. I use a very low watt light in my coup so they will sleep where I want them to. They don't like the dark much.

This is my first winter with Silkies, and even though we are having a mild winter so far here in Missouri, it has gotten down to 15* here some nights, and my birds are all doing just fine. They are now 6+ months old. I do not use heat or lights with any of my birds, for fear that they will get dependant on it, and if a power outage were to occur, they would be in a world of hurt not being used to the cold. I didn't take these kids out to their own coop until they were 8 weeks old, and that was in the heat of the super hot summer we had! I worry more about the heat than I do the cold. Make sure they are in a draft-free coop, with plenty of deep bedding so they can snuggle in.

Thanks again. I checked pubic bone as suggested by Sonoran and they seem wider apart than my four month old cockerel and they sem more flexible so it should be interesting to see if it matures to a boy or girl! Still waiting for input on color??????
