Silkie thread!

I just lost my little porcelin chick hatched 10-8-10....no signs of illness, she looked "sad" also that evening...the next morning she was dead. It's been anywhere from 19 to 60 degrees here & she had a heat lamp. The other 2 that were with her are fine. I hate unexplained death!!! She was so lovely...light silvery body with a dark "pouf".

Sundown, which of these meds did you use? They show several different ones.

You said you have a 'dwarf' silkie. I have 2 white ones that are half the size of the others, perhaps I have them too. I assume they are more fragile because of their size? Have yours ever laid eggs? Mine have not. I'm afraid they would try to lay a full size silkie egg and it would kill them. What's your thought on this?

Muddyhorse, I am so sorry for your losses. I went through the same thing a few months ago and it was heartbreaking. (well, not the mailbox part). I never did figure out why I was losing them, so I'm still baffled and feeling vulnerable to a repeat performance...not knowing what to do. What a terrible time to have to make a decision about the dog. I pray you will have peace in your heart whatever you decide and that you will get through it with strength and courage.

Now about the mailbox, a little C-4 on the back end of it should solve the problem if they hit it again. HAHAHAHAHAHAH! I just love making those mental pictures! (you know I'm kidding, right?) Sometimes laughing in the face of tragedy is the only relief we can get. My daughter taught me a simple little formula: Tragedy plus Time equals Humor (or T + T = H) Some things just need waaaaay more time to be funny.

Destiny, you're right. The security cameras would solve some problems, but they are too much trouble and expense to be practical in this setting. What a shame! I suppose the 'lookout' system is the best one, but the thief will always choose an unguarded moment to strike. I am incensed that the officials would not take action on something that had clear evidence of bird-napping. Were they just too cowardly to take a stand or what? If said officials had the attitude of "it's just a duck" they have no right to be officials at a poultry show!!!!! Vote 'em out! (Or to quote the Red Queen from Alice in Wonderland: "OFF WITH THEIR HEADS" !!!! ha!) I believe I would have said to them, "It may be just a duck to you, but it's MY DUCK and I want him back". Please make sure everyone knows which person(s) to watch at the future shows. You shouldn't have to worry about losing your prize breeding stock when you are exhibiting your best birds. It's just wrong.

How's the new chick doing? Are you still turning her regularly? How long until 'lockdown'?

I am a total rookie and I've never been to a show. But, I am appalled that theft is such a problem. It makes me scared to even get involved in that kind of thing. Like I said, I am new to the chicken thing, but I've had a lot of babies. Why don't they just use the same system? Say if I am showing, I have a bracelet that matches one on any of my birds (maybe with matching numbers). To get a bird out of the building, I would have to show someone by the door our bands. It seems cheaper than a bunch of security cameras and fairly easy to implement.

How about the bald-throated lion silkie?
