Silkie thread!

SilkyMom-- cute babies! :)

OKay... since this is our first go around with adult silkies now... My hen that just started laying last week... she is laying an egg about every other day. Sometimes, it'll be two days before she lays another. Is this typical of them? Or is this because she's a new layer? What are their laying habits?

silkies do tend to lay every other day my one pullet just started laying and im lucky if i get a egg sometimes she will lay an and i have to wait 3 more days tell she lays again

well my silkies are around 7 months old and non has laid an egg so far that i know of but since it is so muddy the egg is probably hiding in it where i can not see it. mine are crazy they seem to love the mud and rain and refuse to get out of it hopefully this summer i can give them all a bath. it rains here one day takes a day off then rains agan so by the time it drys out enough to keep them from getting muddy and i thinkl i can go bath them it rains again. I think i have alot of roosters alot of the white ones has huge combs but i have only seen 2 crow are the females suppose to have huge combs to i can not tell by their head feathers or tail feathers because of them beiing very nasty from the rain and mud it i do have several roosters then i will have to rehome a few because i do not need that many roosters. i will try and take pictures of the combs and when i do please overlook how they look i can not keep them clean with all the rain and mud we have right now but once we get a good time with no rain they will get a bath one at a time in my home so they can dry off and get warm. once dry it will go out and i will bring another one in to bath just wish i could do more at a time to make it go faster but i do not have alot of room in my home to bring more than one or two in at a time. i can not wait till it dries out and i get my income taxes in 2 weeks then i am going to build them a shed over their run to keep the rain out

Just wanted to share some pics of my 2 new silkie chicks that hatched 2 days ago!! I love em so much!!

I have a question, I have 2 full grown silkie hens, 1 started laying a few months ago, then she went broody a few weeks ago when I had happened to just get some shipped eggs in. So I tucked some under her and she was doing fine but my other chickens insisted on laying in the same nest and kept kicking her out so I moved her and the eggs and my other silkie who isn't laying so my bigger girls wouldn't bother her. Well she didn't like the move at all and stopped sitting on the eggs so needless to say none hatched! So here is my question, when they go broody, is there a certain amount of time before they start laying again? Because I was getting an egg from her just about everyday but haven't seen one since?!?!?

They do stop laying when they are brooding. Depends on the bird how quickly they resume laying. I don't have experience with broody Silkies YET (

) but with one of my broodies she was laying again within 3 weeks of hatching. Another took about 13 weeks. (She decided to moult immediately after hatching her brood.) I would expect your girl to get back to business fairly quickly since she didn't complete the task. However, what I've heard about Silkies. I bet she'll go broody again pretty quickly too!!

I'm curious to hear what other Silkie owners have to say on this.

Most of my silkies lay daily except when in molt or brooding eggs/raising chicks. I did have one who only laid very rarely. Stress can cause laying to slow down or stop. In many places, that is winter; here it is more likely to be summer, with egg laying in full swing most of the winter.

When a hen goes broody, she stops laying, so that is 3 weeks until the eggs hatch, and usually another 6 weeks while she raises chicks. Egg laying and kicking the chicks out of the nest seem to coincide pretty closely. Most youngsters are NOT ready to be on their own without a protector at this age, so adding a helpful rooster to the chick pen is a good move--they will usually take up any slack that mama leaves, and there is absolutely NOTHING more precious than to see a papa rooster finding food for his youngsters, teaching them how to forage for themselves or snuggling down with them for a lazy afternoon nap in a spot of sunshine after a nice dustbath.
