Silkie thread!

Does anyone have a white or buff sq/bq cockerel they need to sell? I am in need of one of each as I have the girls but no boys in that color and my girls are sq. They are all laying every day with no roos

Wow, what a position to be in! We have one little white cockerel that I believe will have very good feathering and form when he matures, but he's still only five months so no help and not there yet. I assume you've checked the buy/sell thread? I seem to remember a lot of roos up there recently. I wonder if you posted a wanted up there if someone would be able to help?

Good luck with this! I hope you find some beauitful boys!

I think some type of stress. He isn't a very relaxed roo anyway. He's been having a hard time figuring out the whole breeding thing. Maybe he's stressed over that! I might try putting him by him self for a couple of days just to see if it changes.

Interesting! I notice when my cockerel is outside in his pen and relaxing, he really stands up straight with his chest out and looks so much better than when he is in. I think this next set of eggs are clear too. I'm about to give up! I think I may honestly try the AI! I REALLY want babies!! Someone on another thread was talking about it and they said they used a spoon instead of pipettes-- they said there wasn't as much "loss" because the pipettes don't suck it all up in time. Anyway, interesting people that have done it for years have some neat tricks. They said their really good SQ cochins are too fluffy and would never be fertile. So it's not just silkies, I guess. I wonder if anyone else has this problem with silkies????

If you're not showing them, I would shave their butts, or at least trim off the feathers for better contact.

I would, but they are our 4-H birds, and their first show is March 24th-- then after that, there will be many more shows, and we're supposed to show our breeding project... IF they can actually get 'er done. Sigh.

Can I ask some questions as a newbie????

We are getting 50 Barred Rocks in about 3 weeks for egg laying. I absolutely love the white Silkie Bantams. They are adorable and bring a smile to my face every time I see a photo of one.

Can I put one of the white Silkie Bantams with my Barred Rocks?

Will the Silkie be self conscious and feel out of place? Kind of like the ugly duckling, but obviously not ugly.

Will the Silkie be nice and pretty looking without primping, if it was just kept with the Barred Rocks or do they need a lot of work to look as gorgeous as they do?

Can one be on his/her own or would he/she need a Silkie buddy?

THANKS so much!!!

I'm no expert but my silkies get along well with my laying flock with breeds as small as sicilian buttercups to wyandottes. But mine are kept seperate eating and drinking and sleeping quarters. They free-range during the day with them and get along fine.

I am not really sure on this one, I know my white silkie pullet likes to hang out with the big chickens and tries to fit it as it seems

I would get 2 silkies. I know my silkies stay together all the time and it would be better for them.

Hope this helps and hope you get your silkies!

I'm not sure if mixing it with barred rocks would be a good idea. My grandfather did that and it ended up getting beat to death. They are perfectly fine all alone though. they make great pets and love attention usually.
