Silkie thread!

Interesting! I notice when my cockerel is outside in his pen and relaxing, he really stands up straight with his chest out and looks so much better than when he is in. I think this next set of eggs are clear too. I'm about to give up! I think I may honestly try the AI! I REALLY want babies!! Someone on another thread was talking about it and they said they used a spoon instead of pipettes-- they said there wasn't as much "loss" because the pipettes don't suck it all up in time. Anyway, interesting people that have done it for years have some neat tricks. They said their really good SQ cochins are too fluffy and would never be fertile. So it's not just silkies, I guess. I wonder if anyone else has this problem with silkies????

I just had a thought about the stress level of my roo. He has four hens and seven juveniles in his pen and he is extremely protective especially of the young. I bet that is creating a ton of stress. I'm candling some tonight. I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks for the AI tid bit. Interesting. I could shave bottoms as I'm not showing them. It's a thought.

Can I ask some questions as a newbie????

We are getting 50 Barred Rocks in about 3 weeks for egg laying. I absolutely love the white Silkie Bantams. They are adorable and bring a smile to my face every time I see a photo of one.

Can I put one of the white Silkie Bantams with my Barred Rocks?

Will the Silkie be self conscious and feel out of place? Kind of like the ugly duckling, but obviously not ugly.

Will the Silkie be nice and pretty looking without primping, if it was just kept with the Barred Rocks or do they need a lot of work to look as gorgeous as they do?

Can one be on his/her own or would he/she need a Silkie buddy?

THANKS so much!!!

I'd be reluctant to put a lone Silkie with a flock of Barred Rocks such as you describe. I have a lone Silkie right now. It does tolerably well with the 10 young Marans and Ameraucanas it is used to, or rather, that are used to him, but any of my other chickens not familiar with the puff explosion that Silkies are can be a bit worriesome because they peck at him very suspiciously and because his puff explosion blocks his vision, he doesn't defend himself very well. Furthermore, in my experience, Barred Rocks can be fiesty birds. Maybe not the best fit for a Silkie. (I am currently working on Silkie buddies for my boy and intend to keep the Silkies separate from the others - for all our sakes.)

Silkies are pretty tough little birds as long as they are raised with them.
I have Silkies in with some Shamo, they hatched together, and so far, no problems after almost a year.
I would get more than one, though. He will be picked on if the only fuzzy baby..do 3 if possible.

I'm no expert but my silkies get along well with my laying flock with breeds as small as sicilian buttercups to wyandottes. But mine are kept seperate eating and drinking and sleeping quarters. They free-range during the day with them and get along fine.

I am not really sure on this one, I know my white silkie pullet likes to hang out with the big chickens and tries to fit it as it seems

I would get 2 silkies. I know my silkies stay together all the time and it would be better for them.

Hope this helps and hope you get your silkies!

Very pretty boy! I love his full hackles and proud stance.

Hi I'm brand new owner of 3 little chicks. I had been wanting a Silkie for many years now and finally bought one for myself the 25th. I ended coming home with 3 different chicks, a Silkie, Frizzle and I think a Belgian... (Bad memory with names.) Nugget, my Silkie was about 2 days old when I bought him/her. The guy said it could be either white or buff. What do you guys think? Also is there any way I can tell what sex they are?

The wing feathers will start growing in just a few days and that should tell you. I'm leaning toward buff. Silkie are very hard to sex till they are 3 to 6 mths. and even then sometimes you can't tell till the crow or lay an egg.
