I put a silkie egg under a broody hen, and I marked it with a "S" (with a permanent marker). After a week or two, I noticed no egg had a "S" on it!! Now they're hatching, and I'm eager to see if one is a Silkie. 4 hatched so far and no Silkie.

Which of your beauties laid the egg?

The new girl in my avatar. I was trying to get an egg off of her right after she was shipped to me in case it was fertile.

My first experience with chickens was in the early 90's. I order 25 straight run from McMurray. Out of the 26 (the exotic special was a Polish cockerel) 6 chicks were hens and 20 were cockerels. In the cockerel pen they started to kill one another until I managed to find some one to help me relocate them. I try never to order straight run if possible and certainly not from a hatchery. Although some breeds from hatchery are OK most are in need of lots of culling out the less than desirable if you intend to breed to standard type. And it seems that most of us would like the best looking birds second only to having healthy birds.

Freckle Face Farm You rooster is very handsome ! Congratulations on the win !

Hawkeye95 I am glad that you had the good sense to wake the dazed Broody. I will do the same when I have a broody. Notice I said when.

But I might need to visit Twin Oaks Ranch if the two eggs in the incubator do not make it out of their shells.

I just noticed how close you are to me! I haven't been able to locate any silkie people nearby. Hope you'll stay in touch!

Peepblessed yes I hope to visit some day when I am out your way. I do travel N on 58 to visit my son and daughter-in-law who live in center valley. Remember I commented on the pictures of your lovely ranch ?

I've always thought that an airsack out of place or free floating meant no chick would develop/death of the chick. Then in our last batch of silkie eggs, I noticed when I candled (I think it was day 14--I've been busy!) the air sack was in the middle of the egg and the chick was developing around it. I almost tossed it, but instead marked it and let it develop. Well, when they hatched that one did too! It was the last chick out, but I candled it on the day everyone else was either pipped or out and the air sack was in the right place. The next day it hatched. So...was I just super lucky, or is this something different from free-floating or ruptured air sacks?

Thanks for any info!

ahhh-- I didn't read down far enough yet. Yay on having an amazing hatch from shipped eggs!! Tell me something-- do you think they still had a shot if their air sac had come loose? I just got shipped eggs and 5 have intact sacs-- they others are loose and wiggle when I turn the egg. But I can still clearly see the air sac... Hope your girl starts laying again!
