Silkie thread!

Ho long does it take for a hen to get a full beard. This little hen, I named her Shortie, is already laying and doesn't have a full beard yet.

If she doesn't have a fuller beard by now, she never will. Just like crests the beards can be varying in fullness or even total lack. She looks like a bearded X non bearded offspring, I wouldn't be surprised if you got Non-Bearded chicks from her.

I've always thought that an airsack out of place or free floating meant no chick would develop/death of the chick. Then in our last batch of silkie eggs, I noticed when I candled (I think it was day 14--I've been busy!) the air sack was in the middle of the egg and the chick was developing around it. I almost tossed it, but instead marked it and let it develop. Well, when they hatched that one did too! It was the last chick out, but I candled it on the day everyone else was either pipped or out and the air sack was in the right place. The next day it hatched. So...was I just super lucky, or is this something different from free-floating or ruptured air sacks?

Thanks for any info!

Loose aircells I always set them up in an egg carton at a very slight angle in the incubator and don't turn them for a couple days..They tend to re-sit correctly and I can then turn them. Loose aircells can hatch, I have had ones that was off towards the side and still hatch - so no it is not a fluke :)

Our newest additions. Went to the Poultry show this past weekend where my girls showed 23 birds but still couldn't come home empty handed. Bought these two cuties as presents for my girls for one's Silkie taking RV,RB,and RFL at the show in youth and the others LF Cochin taking BB,BV in the open.

We are hoping this lil Partridge grows up to be a very nice boy that we can put over our partridge pullet.

Very good to know! I haven't dealt with it before, probly cause we mostly hatch our own eggs and store them pointy end down. But, what you hear makes it sound like a really bad thing, so I'm grateful to find it's not necessarily the end for the chick!

ChicksInFL - share a picture of the partridge in a few weeks!

Nice looking birds! Your daughter is precious!

Thank you both. We got the chickies from Freckle Face Farm and of course I'll share more pictures of that partridge as it grows up.

I had Speckled Hen answer me (a Mod) and tell me that they've had good results with loose air sacs-- go ahead and set them and sounds like they have a decent shot. We shall see with mine!
