Silkie thread!

Hey guys
frow.gif
This (I think) girl was born last weekend. Shes a cross between a white roo, and a partiage hen. The other chick of the same mix came out darker. What color would you call her?

Thanks

It will probably feather out white ;)

Sorry, I just saw this--was it meant for me, in response ot the little single comb chick? If so, thank you! If not, thank you anyway!

This is a great perspective on the culling process, and not a way I'd looked at it. I still don't think I'll keep this little guy (though I may grow him for a month just to make sure his comb is what I think it is) but I could see myself feeling really torn were he a paint, especially a paint with nice spots. And It's definitely persuaded me to keep the other black chicks out of paint eggs, and see how they develop. One has promising feet and feathers, and while I can alwasy sell them later as NB, I can't get them back if I need them.

Kinda like cutting your hair, I guess. Better to be sure of the length and snip twice than change your mind after it's gone, right?
Indeed. I will forgive project birds more than ones that are a well-developed variety. Right now I have a single combed chocolate cockerel who will probably go into the breeding pen. My avatar had a very tiny single comb. No way would she have not been in the breeding program. It just depends.

I know most chipmonk pattern chicks end up being partridge but this one really is a cuckoo I believe. I will try to post some pics tomorrow if I can get some good ones but the striping pattern goes from the wing feathers up into the fluff on the shoulders and on the back and chest and even the tail feathers. its head still hasn't feathered in on its head yet so its still pale colored with dark spots. The only thing is its not quite cuckoo colors, (black and gray), its more of a really dark gray and brownish strip pattern. I really need to past some picks so you will see what I mean. I didn't think a chipmonk would turn into a cuckoo either but like I said this chick came from my DD white hen with white roo so I didn't expect the chipmonk pattern either : )

The adorable white Silkie chick I posted about hatching out is almost dead :( She got sick really really quickly (infected navel I think).

So I am going to try again. This is a lot harder than I thought it would be.

Hi Silkie breeders and enthusiasts I could use a bit of help with my first chickens...
I have two partridge silkies that were hatched Oct. 17, 2011...making them 25 weeks old. they are very close in size and weight and way of moving around and standing. One is bearded and the other not. I cannot detect any difference between their crests. They came in a "pullet only" order from My Pet Chicken with 4 EEs and a couple of Welsummers and all get along with each other just fine and all roost shoulder to shoulder on the top roost at night. ( I'm thinking they don't know what Silkies are and aren't supposed to be able to do.)
One of the EEs started laying three weeks ago and I believe her increased noise and stimulation has encouraged the rest of the flock to mature faster. I'm noticing everyone's combs and wattles growing and coloring up.
The non bearded Silkie is WAY MORE vocal than the other although I wouldn't call her noise a crowing but almost daily she starts her loud calling and goes on for almost a minute. She doesn't exhibit any other behaviors that you'd expect from a rooster protecting his harem, at least non I've observed.
I am concerned I have a rooster...I live in the city and roos aren't allowed.
I need to know about what age I'd expect to see mating behavior. None of the other hens have any indication they have been mounted with broken back feathers or scratches.
Sounds a bit paranoid I guess but they have stolen my heart and I wouldn't want to have to re-home any of them.
Thanks for any help you can give.

Okay-- for anyone that shows Silkies-- we need to know this and I've googled and can't find this. Do Silkies have an Axel feather in each wing? When we were going over wing feathers at the show, the leader was unable to determine if we had an axel feather and told my son to leave it off his list of feathers when he named them. Looks like about every other bird had one, as they were all named and shown. Since their feathers are shredded.... is it difficult to determine, or do they just not have one?
