Silkie thread!

I need some help... If I wanted to buy a top of the line silkie rooster what breeder would you suggest I get him from??

There are many good silkie breeders, and a number of different considerations for selecting someone to purchase from.

1) What variety you are looking for
2) Where you are located
3) The lines that your hens are from
4) How much you are willing to pay (including shipping)
5) Which traits are most important for breeding into your flock

There are probablhy a whole bunch of other considerations, but those were the ones that came up almost without thinking.

I am in desperate need of a partridge roo!! If you decide to get rid of them, let me have a looksie.

What are you looking for? I almost always have extras, and right now I know I have several--some not in good condition--it is spring, and they all want to beat each other up

I'm getting pretty excited about these two splash (pullets I think). They will be 3 1/2 months next weekend. It's amazing how they suddenly go from the awkward bad hair day to looking like they just stepped out of the beauty parlor.

What do you guys think?

Very pretty-- so far, no signs of hackle feathers! This one (above) doesn't look like there are much feathers on it's feet. But she sure seems to have a nice chest so far! I bet their crest will continue to fill out too-- they are a bit irregular, but mine changed and became more rounded as they got older and got more pin feathers in. :) Beautiful coloring!

Ok everyone! Im back. I am almost 90% sure I have 3 roosters out of 8 silkies. I hatched out 8 in December and one started crowing recently the other two have REALLY dark big combs with waddles! Ugh mad about the quality. Anyways though when my partridge was a chick someone on here told me that if they have eyeliner they are pullets if Im right at looking at this one and by the way it acts! It looks to be only a matter of time before he begins crowing.

So just to let you know the eyeliner means nothing! I am almost 99.9% sure that this silkie is a roo..... Anyways I was also wondering does the buff/partridge color breed true?

Ok here is my match up I though about doing...

Buff hen X a Partridge roo

What will the chicks look like? I dont have a buff rooster but I was wanting some more partridge and buffs. what will this make.

I also have a white rooster I could breed my buff hen too. What would that make? Thanks!!

Silver Silkie said that about the eye liner... but I'm pretty sure he had a couple of qualifiers for it too--- like what KIND of partridge it was, etc.. I don't remember now. I guess you'd have to go back and see exactly what he said. But yeah, I do recall he said something like that. Sorry about your possible roo... can you post a picture? Does he have hackles?? I have to tell you that i had a cockerel turn out to be a Pullet!! She had longer hackles when her pin feathers were growing in AND her crest was growing longer and bigger-- and all I saw were streamers! I was like 99% sure I had a cockerel. Well guess what? She's laying. ha! Her crest came in big and round and the "streamers" went away as the rest of the crest filled in. She even had the breeder convinced it was a cockerel-- because I got her as a "boy". I'm glad she turned out to be a girl.

Thanks Hawkeye, Yes, their crests do seem to round out but not always. I am wondering about her foot feathering. She has several feathers on the middle toe but they all grow toward the outside so it looks at some angles like there aren't any. I've wondered about how bad that is. Her middle toe looks bare in this shot doesn't it?
