Silkie thread!

Question...have any of you had much luck with shipped month-old chicks? Typically there is no guarantee once they leave the breeder
so I am wondering how successful shipping month old chicks has been for folks. Any advice?

Lovely birds! You will definitely need to seperate out those older boys, keep a watch on them that they don't try to mount the smaller/younger birds because they can seriously hurt them if their big butts try to mount and mate young pullets or even cockerels (dominance thing) who are smaller and the bones more fragile.

The black and gold boys are beautiful and yes thats called leakage, if you had partridge I'd say hold onto the one with alot of gold leakage (some I know call them red-necks lol) and use for partridge breeding.

I'd hold onto the paint roo and use him over any white and black girls (silkie or showgirl) you have to try to breed for more paints.

I see you have numerous blues so i would hold onto the blue cockerel I think i seen in one picture with the paint roo and use him with your blue girls to get blue and splash offspring.

Thank you! I am going to have to move the babies out of there. The paint roo is smaller than the other larger roos and I think he picks on them because they are the only ones smaller than he is. I haven't seen the little ones being mounted but the two little ones and the paint fight alot. I don't get it because none of the others fight at all, just these three. I have a smaller pen I can move them to. I am in LOVE with the little white showgirl. When I got out to the coop and sit in a chair to watch them he/she comes running to me almost as if he want's to be held.

The lady I got them from said to put my blue girls with the paint roo because she breeds her blue and splash together. I will probably put the black hens with the blue boy maybe? I think I will keep the white boy with the white hen that I got from her and I had two white hens of my own.

Oh it was so funny this morning. One of my white hens that I already had free ranges and I guess she didnt know there were new chickens until this morning. I got up early and she followed me to the coop because she wanted me to feed her. I went in the coop and opened the door so the new ones could come out. The blue boy started crowing and my little white hen got so excited. She started clucking away trying to talk to him so I let her in. She runs in all happy and starts scratching and pecking the ground. He crowed again and she squatted on the ground like she wanted to breed. LOL I guess she has been missing having a man around here. I had to let her back out because she has a month old chick who needs her.

I can't wait to see if I get any eggs today. How old are silkies when they start laying usually? I know the white girl is a year old but the blue & black hens are about 7 months old.

My favorite new boy I got yesterday - hes about 5 months old as well

New black hen (2/4/11 hatch) Black Poppy is her name

These guys are super nice, Jessy!!

They are here! I am so excited!!! Here are some pics of my new babies! Chicken math got me and I got more roos than I probably should have but they were all so cute and free so how could I say no? They weren't all free, LOL but I got a bargain. All 12 of these beauties for under $100. They are all a year old or less and so sweet and tame! I absolutely love the showgirls.

The paint boy is a bit of a bully and he is picking on the white showgirl baby in pic one. The white showegirl looks like a hen but acts like a roo and he/she is absoluetely my favorite. He comes to me and wants to be held. :) May have to seperate the 2 little ones until they get bigger or give away some roos.

He's really pretty and she gave me 2 roos that look like this. She said the gold on his neck was not good for show and it's called leakage.

I love all my fuzzy butts!

I think you've good some really nice birds there! A steal at the price I'd say!

Ok! I too need to share pictures of my pet chickens with everyone!

I took these pictures not too long ago and chickies are still cruising around the yard.

Lila and Ruby (on the left) saw Cami the Llama on the other side of the fence and weren't quite sure what to make of him.
