Silkie thread!

Lynzi, how far up are you? Are you looking for show quality, or just pets? Any particular color?
There is a show on April 22 in CT, there will be a few of us there with birds for sale.

I'm going to be living in Syracuse, in Albany right now. I was just in CT too visiting family. I guess my next best bet is to look for some type of schedule of upcoming shows not too far from me. I'm not looking for show quality. This is just a small hobby I'm going to start with my son and wanted to start out with 2-3 silkies and add some Buff Orpingtons later. But maybe I'll start with the BOs add silkies later.

This is my little poser - Elliot, at 19 weeks. He has quite a few pin feathers in his crest right now so it's uneven but I think he's fabulous (knowing nothing about Silkies!)

He is gorgeous! I see LOTS of potential with this guy type wise. Only thing I'm not fond of is the wings (loose and 'lazy' pose to them)

Nice job! But I would raise the tail (shorter back and higher tail) and the wing (bottom should be horizontal). Look at my avatar.

Pretty blue partridge--and while I think the wing angle could be higher, I very much like that it is tightly closed. I see too many that are very loose and wide open.

I was just using her for the example, that was the best pic I could find of my own for the example. I have a really nice typey hen but shes not much of sitting still and posing for me, she'd rather be busy following her man or trying to figure out what I'm doing.

Wings on her usually are high and just shy of horizontal when shes still and posing properly. Shes 5 months old so I hope she'll only improve shes full of pins.

I will see if I can get someone else's mature super typey girl picture that they don't mind me doctoring with for an example and will do a better one. But as I said it was an example of how I personally remember what to look for, I know everyone has a different eye and method ;)

A young pullet but the best picture of my own I could find quick to do an example with...

this is MY personal way of evaluating and remembering what to look for with type...

Orange : top of neck below the crest, down across the curve of the back and up over the tail/cushion to the vent should be a nice S shape. The more defined the S the better

PINK: bird facing forward (which Truffles is not) beak to the curve of the depth of the chest down and below to the belly should be a S shape, again the more deep/defined (especially the bottom curve) that S the better.

YELLOW : Wings wings should be closed together and close the the body in a triangle, in this picture her wings are held a little loose, the yellow triangle shows where the wings should be - tucked under the cushion and as she finishes filling out her cushion will most likely hide the tips of her wings.

LOVE this!!! My problem is understand the wings! Thank you!! Looks like my cockerel is too loose!

Okay-- so after seeing these pictures, my hens are probably pretty decent in the wing department. ;) BUT my cockerel definitely is NOT. Loose sloppy wings for sure! Are the chances of that being passed on pretty good? He is all I have that is decent. I'm hoping to go to our big state wide meet at the end of this month.. maybe find something nice there. But if not-- is this a genetic trait that is difficult to breed out-- do you get offspring that could be fine? Especially considering the hen is much better looking than he is?? We have another poultry show this weekend up near Kansas City again. I have yet to run into anyone that has nicer birds than mine. I'm thinking people are using their hatchery birds to show. Sigh. Disappointing so far. I've been wanting to friend someone in my state that has nice birds so I could trade (later on down the road) or get eggs, etc..

Okay-- tell me how bad he is!! This is how he holds himself when he is getting attention: (i know, not the greatest pic, sorry!!)

This is him still half wet so he's not all fluffed--- BUT you can see his wings pretty good after his bath. Usually they are covered up by fluff. Now I realize they are REALLY loose! But how bad are they??? Bad enough not to breed??? Since he's my only decent boy, I'd like to give him a shot. Thoughts on that??? (oh and ignore his crest here-- it was half flattened from his bath)

Here's another one after his bath: (he's a little hunched over here, though)
