Silkie thread!

I had a silkie with angel wings. If I had known what to do, I likely could have corrected it when it was a baby.

Peep, Could you please explain or show a case of "Angel Wing"?? I know what split wing is, but the Angel wing must be a Silkie thing, or is it? Also, how do you fix it?? Thanks.

What a precious picture!

Thank you! Will be wondering about the sex soon. I see in other pictures, that they seem to be harder to tell by the wings..and the tail..what tail? lol..the puff ball? I am still going by the wing..a lot of wing has come out, and is more pointy than squared off. Time will tell.
And someone is asking about angel wing? I am interested what that is also.

Most breeders can tell the sex of their silkies by the time they are 3 or 4 months old but often they are not sure till they crow or lay an egg. Angel wings are where the primary feathers fold up on top of the secondaries instead of below them.

Ok, thanks. How do you fix them??

Here's a picture of a 12 week old cockerel with angel wings. From the side view it looks a lot like split wing but when viewed from the top the primaries stick out from the body because they don't fold under the primaries. It is common in ducks. There are different methods of taping the wings into the right position when they are very young.

So, some of the secondaries are bunched up between the primaries causing it to look split? That's kind of what that pic looks like. Is it a hatch or hereditary thing? Does it typically happen more in some colors than others? Thanks for the pic, I know what I'll be doing tomorrow!

Some people believe it's caused by diet (maybe most people). I don't think it's that common in silkies but I could be wrong. Here's a link that shows the treatment.

Thanks everyone!! The chick is doing great. I noticed that the toe on the far outside (mostly covered in feathers) is missing a toenail!!! It's like the toe is a bit short. That's how it caught my eye-- it looked a bit shorter than it should. That is disappointing. What causes this?? Genetic or an incubation thing?? Are they no good for breeding later on??

Split means that 1 color has been bred to another in most cases black. If you breed lavender to black some of the (plain black to lavender i think all offspring will be black) some will carry the lavender gene and be "Split" meaning when bred BACK to Lavender or to each other (Split X Split) you will get some lavender offspring. to get Lavender you have to have two copies of the color gene - coming from each parent. So some chicks will get 1 copy of the gene - those are Splits and some will get two copies of the gene and they will visibly be Lavender in color and Split to Split or Split to lavender some chicks will get no lavender gene and will just be black.

Does that make sense?
Yes, makes perfect sense. Thank you.
