Orange Sherbert and Truffles
Have you paired up Sherbet and Truffles, Jessy? I can't wait to see what he produces!!

At the moment Sherb has not gotten a feel for his "Oats" - but I do plan to breed him to Truffles, my other Blue partridge girl (in the thought process he IS a splash partridge), and then will breed him to my white girl SnowWhite who is out of Partridge parents. I want to eventually try to find a Porcelain or Red Paint pullet to breed with him as well. Trial and error will go into trying to find the right color to breed him with.

OKay, so this chick is 11 days old now. I don't know what I'm going to do with it. It hatched out with the end part of the outside toes missing on BOTH sides. It's like the last little knuckle just isn't there. What's the deal with toes? Does this get genetically passed on, or could this be incubation? My broody hatched this one-- BUT there was a couple of days that she kicked this egg out (I know, because I marked it because I didn't think it would hatch after that) of the nest and it got really cool. I don't know why she did that. My parent birds dont have any missing toes, but since I didn't raise them, I have no idea what is in their background. Ideas?? I'll be hatching out more from this same couple in a few more days, so I guess I'll see if those chicks also have issues or not with their toes. If they do, I guess I have a pretty big problem. I sure hope this is a fluke!

Sounds like you've got a great plan! How fun!!

I had one hatch like this by a broody with four eggs and no problems with the hatch. Parents are fine. It's just the toenails that are missing. I was told it might be a point or two off on judging and definitely not a DQ. I would also like to find out more about it.

It's a genetic "defect" called "brachydactyly" (By is the gene) that is often paired with the genes for feathered legs. It is autosomal dominant. Basically, heavy leg feathering interferes with the development of the outer toe. (It is a BIG issue with Marans, for example, a breed I work with. I have experience with the short outside toes with them.) Do your parent birds perhaps have short outside toes, perhaps even with nails, but not SO short?
