Ok, I see all these wonderful photos of you guys getting your chicken to sit still. OMG, this is so difficult. We chase them all over and I take 100 photos trying to get it! Ha! Anyways, here is the promised pics of our einstein vs. lil bird. They were hatched together, I have had them since they were 1 week old. taken last night, they are 6 weeks old here.

That is insane how small the little one is compared to the other-- and hatched at the same time!! WOW! That is really odd and amazing that the chick has lived this long. Your white chicks is GORGEOUS! Love his feathering!

I've had some that get way behind the rest in development. I have one chick whose hatch date is 1-22-12 and is the same size as the ones who hatched 3-10-12 but featherwise the older chick looks like a mini-adult.
I also recently got in the mail from a breeder in WI 4 chicks that hatched 2-20 about the same age as the majority of my 'teenagers' and they are HUGE by comparison.

Either your chick is a dwarf, or is just a very late developer. I've had some like that and it takes them forever to feather out and 'get pretty' but they more often than not are the prettiest birds and look perfectly normal when they reach 6-7 months old.

lol. These are our first chickens, so whatever we get...we get! He is awfully funny looking right now, just really weird feathering popping out in all directions, odd dolor too. We love him to death. He used to cry/cheep all day long. I kept thinking he was burning calories cheeping so much, so we all carried him around the house all day. It was crazy. Until we started feeding him scrambled eggs, he didn't grow at all. Once we started the eggs, he began eating all the food we give him now. I hope its a pullet I think I would die if I had to get rid of him. Our little white one has show parents. I didn't care really, but the parents won some shows in Austin area. The little guy is supposed to be a buff/blue splash. When I first got them, they were the exact same size. weird huh. Now, he just doesn't seem to grow taller....just wider.

Just got my first Silkie chicks this morning! Sooooooooo darling

That would be a decent price in my book, but I'm FAR from being an expert!  Two other questions arise: Do you ship, and what are the shipping cost?

We are just getting into BYC and my kids have become truly excited about it all.  It's amazing because we operate an exotic animal rescue & they have seen every sort of exotic creature from parrots to pythons and from tarantulas to big monitor lizards.  All they can talk about is chickens!  When they discovered that Silkies existed they completely flipped and told me they have to get a couple.

Tell me, how do silkies get along with other breeds?

That is so cute! I hope you find some nice ones from a breeder. Shipping is usually around $50 depending on weight. Try to find someone close so the trip isn't so long.

I am learning these Silkies are ODD birds! I have 11 3 and a half week old Silkie chicks growing out in a 4' by 4' grow out area. (LOADS of space at this point.) Heard SCREAMING coming from the box so I raced down to see what was up. Two of the biggest chicks (porcelain and splash, that I've assumed are males because of their size and kick-boxing) were going at it like a pair of full grown cock birds. With a third nutty chick busily trying to break it up. It was NUTS! The porcelain actually emerged with a beak full of chick down.

I finally hollered at them but sheesh, I've raised MANY batches of large fowl Marans, Ameraucanas, Easter Eggers, and mutts with early crowing boys etc. NEVER had an all out brawl this young. Jeepers. I'm seriously considering putting my 6 month old Silkie cockerel in with them to keep the peace. Sheesh!!!

I've got 3 that are going at it- my 2 sultans and one silkie. They are 6.5 weeks old. I'm pretty sure that at least the one silkie and one sultan are roos, just based on behavior- the one sultan will actually hop and stomp on the others. The other day, the 3 of them were going at it hot and heavy and there was a lot of noise. The one was grabbing the silkie's head and yep, doing the feather grabbing. Darn if nobody is crowing yet, so until they do that, it's hard for me to give up my delusions of them maybe being girls. I've got one in there that sings like a song bird, though, and I have yet to figure out which one it is. The one sultan, though, will stare down the big girls, so I'm pretty sure he's a he and will be gone in a few weeks.

I figure, if they get as bad as they were the one day, I am going to remove the worst of the bunch and put it in a time out in the smaller brooder. I remember doing that one time last year with Jasmine before he crowed and had to be rehomed. One part of me is like "get to crowing and get it over with so I don't have the boxing" but I'm still sorta trying to keep my fingers crossed. Meh.
