Silkie thread!

I've had some that get way behind the rest in development. I have one chick whose hatch date is 1-22-12 and is the same size as the ones who hatched 3-10-12 but featherwise the older chick looks like a mini-adult.
I also recently got in the mail from a breeder in WI 4 chicks that hatched 2-20 about the same age as the majority of my 'teenagers' and they are HUGE by comparison.

Either your chick is a dwarf, or is just a very late developer. I've had some like that and it takes them forever to feather out and 'get pretty' but they more often than not are the prettiest birds and look perfectly normal when they reach 6-7 months old.
i have something like this right know

I've got 3 that are going at it- my 2 sultans and one silkie. They are 6.5 weeks old. I'm pretty sure that at least the one silkie and one sultan are roos...
On the Sultans....IME, they can be sexed fairly early by their crests. Girls will have a neat crest that looks like she carefully combs it every morning. Boys crests will be unruly, sticking out any which way - looks like just got out of bed and didn't bother to comb their hair at all.

I agree with ScaredOfShadows, your chicks do look like lavenders and not splash. It's unfortunate that the supplier wasn't better organized with their records so you could be confident. I believe any Silkie can have pink toes but no Silkie should have pink toes. Hopefully, those with more experience working with Silkies will respond as well.

ya he wasent orginized but he did say sorry also he said 2 ppl came there without making arrangements first and had big orders

That would be a decent price in my book, but I'm FAR from being an expert!  Two other questions arise: Do you ship, and what are the shipping cost?

We are just getting into BYC and my kids have become truly excited about it all.  It's amazing because we operate an exotic animal rescue & they have seen every sort of exotic creature from parrots to pythons and from tarantulas to big monitor lizards.  All they can talk about is chickens!  When they discovered that Silkies existed they completely flipped and told me they have to get a couple.

Tell me, how do silkies get along with other breeds?

We love our two silkies and are about to hatch some more. The kids love their "fur" and how easy they are to catch & pick up. They get along fine with other breeds although sometimes you may need to separate them to protect them from pecks on their skulless heads. We haven't separated ours and we did loose one to some sort of "accident" over Christmas. We're still not sure what happened but we did have too many roosters at the time and the one we lost was a rooster.

Hope you enjoy your silkies!

Yes, the lack of black in the hackles is why I didn't say columbian. For a grey, he is really, really light. It would be worth using a bird like him if you are working on columbian.

Do you know that this is the best thing I've heard all day!!

Today has been the worst day I've had for a loooong time. Nobody at the farm seems to be doing their jobs and I've had to take and do everything myself. On a farm with 65 equines + another 80 or so small animals with half a dozen workers on a normal day, not a whole lot of fun for me.
Anyway. Good thing I decided to get on the internet for a minute or two on lunch break.

I love my rooster Curly.

I know he's not perfect but he's the nicest little guy.
I believe his wattles and the thing on his forehead are too red? My brain has completely shut down at the moment and I can't even think of proper names for these chicken body parts. That's sad. lol And on top of too red, he has those little spikey things/horns (again, lack of proper wording) that would get him DQ'd in a show, correct?

Now back out to the barn! I'll have to check on the hatching eggs, there were 2 zipping hour ago.
