Quote: Comb is redder than I prefer, but acceptably dark for hte standard of mulberry. Horns are not a DQ, although they are a defect. About 15 or 20 years ago the standard required them. I can't see them in the photo. I do see the protuberances like in a rough textured rose comb, and don't care for them. The standard doesn't really address the texture, so that also would not be a DQ.
Thank you so much, you are so sweet! It's silly how upset I get over it, but they are all such wonderful little birds, I hate to see one not make it. My new babies are really making me happy-- so excited about them! LOLHawkeye, sorry to hear about your one chick, but that new baby is to die for cute!!
Thank you! Hey, I appreciate your feedback. Okay, so I was right about the hackles, but this Columbian project color is something I've got my eye on. I think they are gorgeous! BTW, I love your new avatar bird-- that is an amazing Paint!Yes, the lack of black in the hackles is why I didn't say columbian. For a grey, he is really, really light. It would be worth using a bird like him if you are working on columbian.
Sanna, I really like him. Yes, his comb and wattles are too red for sure.... BUT, this is a color that people are working on and they are having the same issues. He would be a great start. It'll be so wonderful when they get this color all ironed out. I'd love to be a part of it. If it were ME--- I would go hunt someone down that has a Columbian hen and see what you get! Try to get one that has a nice dark comb. Breed them and be SUPER picky about ONLY breeding back the correct Columbian color-- or as close to. I love your boy!!! I was so shocked when you posted his picture! LOL I dream about this color being perfect. Since he is not an approved color, you can not show him in the typical sense... BUT, you could show him as an AOV-- which is basically the project colors people are working on like Paint, and of course, Columbian! I hope your hatch goes well!! Good luck with your babies!!Do you know that this is the best thing I've heard all day!!![]()
Today has been the worst day I've had for a loooong time. Nobody at the farm seems to be doing their jobs and I've had to take and do everything myself. On a farm with 65 equines + another 80 or so small animals with half a dozen workers on a normal day, not a whole lot of fun for me.
Anyway. Good thing I decided to get on the internet for a minute or two on lunch break.![]()
I love my rooster Curly.I know he's not perfect but he's the nicest little guy.![]()
I believe his wattles and the thing on his forehead are too red? My brain has completely shut down at the moment and I can't even think of proper names for these chicken body parts. That's sad. lol And on top of too red, he has those little spikey things/horns (again, lack of proper wording) that would get him DQ'd in a show, correct?
Now back out to the barn! I'll have to check on the hatching eggs, there were 2 zipping hour ago.![]()
Silver Silkie, I'm impressed with what you're doing! I really like their combs! I know you are working on crests-- so they look a bit on the smaller side, but still not terrible, very striking and overall, I agree, good type. I can not believe the color you have in your Black Silver--- WOW!!!
Well, this will be fun to see what they turn out like! Take them outside, get a good picture and it will come in handy for comparing later on down the road.thats the thing i bought these birds from a hatchery/breeder and he said he couldnt find the splash chicks but the ones i got i think are splash espeicelly since one chick has a pink toe
Welcome to Silkies!!! I have some eggs that will be hatching right about the same time!! I think mine are the 20th. I don't vaccinate, and I don't have a real good pro or con for it. Although I know I'll probably never vaccinate for Mareck's, Mine don't seem any more fragile-- except that I just don't let them get in the mud or really get wet from rain. I sure hope you have a really great hatch! Good luck and everyone here is so nice about answering questions, so jump in!Hi! I am new to this thread. I am hatching Silkies and they are due to hatch around the 21st or 22nd. I was wondering if any of you who hatch and raise silkies vaccinate against Mareck's? If you do, how much do you give them? Any thoughts for or against would be great! I have many different breeds of laying hens and this is my first foray into the Silkie world. Are they more fragile than other chickens? I got my eggs from good show quality birds. She culls heavily and is very selective when it comes to her breeding stock.
I am very excited for my babies to hatch! 21 days seems like a very long time!
Thanks!
Kim
