Sorry, I would guess yours to be a roo too.

That said, I really love my boys' personalities much more so than the girls. Mine are not mean at all. I did have one that tried to "fight" me, but he had a shoe fetish, and if I came into the run in something different, he would attack my feet!

It was quite funny really. He went to another home due to conformational issues only. I also have a large fowl roo that IS a manfighter! If I had children here, he would SO be soup! But he makes me laugh, and my dog watches my back when Mr. Sneakypants wants to attack. We are talking a 12lb. chicken here, so we watch ourself!! Silkies, not so much. If they do give you any flack, just pick them up and carry them around with you while you do your chicken chores. That will usually cool their jets.

Yes she does... Just candled today to make certain all 9 were still kicking and they are looking good and lively! There are 2 blacks, 2 blue/splash, 2 paint, 2 lavender, and one porcelain, all due to hatch on Monday, May 14th. When I was at the Stevenson Northwest Poultry Association show last month, I was getting Serama eggs and knew they wouldn't take up much room in my incubator so I just happened to be able to catch up with Karen who had a few dozen eggs to sell. I couldn't possibly make up my mind which color to choose since these were going to be my first silkies so I took the assorted box. The more I see photos, the more excited I am for these babies to hatch! I do live in the city so am thinking I won't be able to keep any of the boys unless I hide them in the garage next to the Seramas...

Keeping fingers crossed for a good number of girls!

Aww one of mine ended up being a roo had to give him back cause the husband said no Roos more cause he doesn't want to bother our neighbors ...but honestly he was sad to see him go cause he was super sweet he loved to be carried allowed my 3yr old to pick him up and carry him around like a baby... So I say maybe give him a chance see how his temperament is ...

hey everyone i have a question about silver partridge silkies how can u tell there silver partridge and not just a black with the silver partridge in it plzz fill me in

At least I have a good general idea now. I had not clue. Only knew they were older than my 5 weekers. Girls are great and I am hoping for at least 2 roos. I have these two, then the 2x 5 weekers, 3x 2 weekers, and 5 x 3 weekers. I have already decided on one little 3 weeker I will let go.

Okay one more picture. This is one of the hatchery chicks (3 wks). It is suppose to be a Blue. When I took him/her outside today boy the color of it really popped like I did not notice till now. So what color would this be called. Love the color. Only thing I wish it had a nice crest.
Looks like a Splash to me. If you ordered Blues from a hatchery, (or anywhere else), chances are you will get Splash if the parents are Blue X Blue, or Blue x Splash, or even a straight Splash x Splash. Don't discount the little guys too early, unless they have obvious faults, like cross beak, not enough or too many toes, etc. These birds can change dramatically within the course of a couple of weeks! Both in conformation and color!!!

Here is an updated pic of my only Silkie; who on the gender board; I have two people stating it is a Roo..but with it only being about 2 1/2 months old or so..? it could be too early to tell for sure...

anyway; here is Puffle...She is my first Silkie; I dont want anymore roos..we've had two terribly mean Roos that we've had to cull..I am very leary about having anymore Roos...

So, if Puffle is a Puff...we may not be able to keep him/her...<sigh> I was already told my Polinda GLPolish is a roo...<sigh> double..sigh..

I'm not an expert but even to me, this one looks like a little boy with his comb and wattles.

really? thats good cause we had a turken that was meaner than HECK!!
Then we had a really good Roo (mixed breed) but after an attack from predators where they got 25 of our girls...and who knows what the
predator did to him and the other hens that survived..he is meaner than you can even imagine; he even is mean to his own flock..& he attacked our son (no damage) and
attacked our 21 yr old daughter; nice hole in her hand..big time..

he is meeting the stock pot tomorrow.. :-(

and hubby/I were really leary of another Roo..
I wouldn't worry about a Silkie rooster. I can only speak from personal experience, but I have not yet met a mean Silkie roo. There's one crabby one out there in our pen. Sometimes he thinks he's feeling a bit macho and he'll ruffle his feathers at you and he probably thinks he can take you on. But if you take one step towards him he'll run away like a little girl.
lau.gif
Let alone try to pick him up, he'll try to "fly" away. lol My rooster on the other hand is the sweetest thing! He's almost twice the size of this little crabby one and he gets picked on by the little punk! Can you believe that? lol We've even used my rooster during our farm tours so our visitors can pet a Silkie. Our visitors range between infants and REALLY old. lol I don't mean to sound insulting when I say old, but we really do get a lot of 'very senior' visitors. They're great!
So, with that said. My rooster Curly is, I think, is a pretty darn good example of a good Silkie rooster.

He's a very good boy. Doesn't mind being held and grabbed by little kids either. lol

If they do give you any flack, just pick them up and carry them around with you while you do your chicken chores. That will usually cool their jets.

Love how you worded everything.

lol It's so true.

Champagne Paint... could you go a little farther on that color?
I have a few Paints that the parents were directly from Bren.
But they are a very smutty white color, and getting darker the older they get.
Of course, I don't have pics yet, the more I look at them, the more I dislike their color, so that is why no pics.
Maybe if I find out that they really are something, instead of dirty looking, I would appreciate them more.
Thanks for your time!

This is how I see the different Paint phenotypes (this is only a hypothesis* of mine) as you can notice I see them as a mutation on the Dominant white gene
(a little comparable written as Dun (I^d/i+) and Khaki (I^d/I^d) but with a different inheritance way) :

(I write also the "no-paint" mutation as "p+" to let see the complete picture of my hypothesis)

1 (i+^p+/i+^p+) = pure Black having no "paint-gene" mutation and 6 (I^p+/I^p+) = pure White having no "paint-gene" mutation
2 (i+^P/i+^p+) = pure Black having 1 dosis of the "paint-gene" mutation and 5 (I^P/I^p+) = pure White having 1 dosis of the "paint-gene" mutation
3 ( I^P/i+^p+) = unpure White having 1 dosis of the "paint-gene" mutation and 4 (I^P/i+^P) = unpure White having 2 dosis of the "paint-gene" mutation

So 3 and 4 are real "Paints" but I suppose you could call number 3 a Champagne Paint (dirty whitish, with gray shine .... whatsoever you want to call it), number 4 would be than the real clear white Paint.

* I am curious for your reactions !?
