Silkie thread!

Wow that sounds great. Currently I'm using wood chips but we did just have some mite problems (thankfully all cleared up now).

I think it would be rather expense for me to buy though.

I love my sand too! I wanted it to help keep them clean, and it does work well.

It was $60 for 2 cubic yards here (totally worth it).

You can also give them a cat litter box with sand and DE. They will love it!

Do you use sand in the actual coop or just in the run... ?

we have a mix of birds; NN, BA, BR, etc...and we use sand in the run only...(of course it mixes with their poop and makes it uber hard after a while!)..

We live in a low humidity climate which dries things out really fast so people who live in humid climates are going to experience some differences. And of course the amount of birds you have per square foot is also a huge factor.

Just a quick pic (that took 2 hours to upload here!), of my 4.5 week olds. This was only their second trip outside, and it amazes me how their instincts about predators kicks in! A Lunar moth came flying over the X-pen, and swooped in on them. Woody, the Partridge boy on the left, let out a warning screech, and they all hit the ground, face first and on their bellies, with their wings stretched out, and FROZE!

If I hadn't seen it happen and walked up onto that scene, I would've thought I had 6 dead chicks! Oh my, was that hilarious!!

The Partridge girl on the right is out of a Splash mom, yes, I watched her lay it! Can't wait to see what color she turns into, she is so much paler in her background color than the rest of my Parti kids. She also has some nice stenciling on her wings, which you probably can't see here..

Wow that must have been so funny talk about perfect timing. I guess that only happens while their crests are still small and while they can still see, I frighten some of my hens when I reach down and touch them I guess they don't see me standing there.
