Silkie thread!

Just wondering my pure silkie roos in my breeding program all have black combs and wattles , but he has red like some cross silkies I have. does this mean that they are not pure silkies if they have the red? Ive only used the ones with black in my breeding program. Just wondering because ive passed up alot of nice birds like this one because of this.
I"m glad someone answered that because I couldn't!

PS: We are in Arizona too, near I-17 and Carefree hwy :)

We lost a little paint chick overnight. I kinda knew it was coming. I think the trip from TX to PA was just too much for her. I really hate this part of having chickens....

Ditto. It's such a bummer when we lose one.

Do any of you know anything about frizzles? I think mine is a cochin and silkie mixed together, not really sure if thats how they make them.

Anyways, I'm showing my frizzle at a fair in a couple of weeks and was wondering if anyone new if she looked show quality or not.
Sorry if this is too off topic. I'm pretty sure she is part silkie, though.

No silkie in this bird, but this is a STUNNING bird!! LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this bird!!!

GoldBarRanch, you do not want red in your comb or wattles. They would be considered pet quality and I would not use them to breed with. The SOP calls for:
Comb
Male - Walnut - set firmly and evenly on head, almost circular in shape, preferably broader than longer, with a number of small prominences over it, a slight indentation or furrow transversely across the middle, rising at a point just forward of the nostrils and extending backwards to a point parallel with front of eyes.
Female - Walnut - very small, well formed. Rest of the description same as the male.

And you are correct in thinking that the red would be passed down, and it is undesirable. I do not know if it is a disqualification, as I have not (and will not) show any birds with a red comb. I do have two hatchery silkie roosters and they have red combs that have little bump like "horns" in them that are also not desirable. They are in with my layers and are a lot of fun and sweet birds, but will never be mixed with my nice birds. And if I could get rid of them, I would! LOL I've offered to give them away for free locally, but no takers. hehe!!

COMBS:

I have shown this picture a lot, but I have a nice up-close shot of my cockerel's comb and the color it SHOULD be.

Notice there are no horn like bumps in it, either. I was giving him a bath here, so do ignore that he is a flat mess. ha!

Also, here is a picture of my pullet and her comb with the correct size and color and shape on her comb-- nice and dark and small. When she is dry and fluffed, it is near impossible to even see her comb, it is hidden in her crest.

and this is them all fluffed and ready to show:

Oh no! That is so terribly sad about losing your Paint. :( Did she ship thru the mail? When I get a shipped bird, I give them sugar water and electrolytes. Often, I've had to syringe it down them, too, if they refuse. Those first hours are so critical. Anyway, again, I'm very sorry about your bird.
