I have another question. I have never owned bantams before and now have 11 silkies. What is the recommended sq ft in the coop and also out in the run.
I know LF need about 4 sq ft in the coop and 10 sq ft in the run.
What is your recommendation for silkies need for space as a breed?

It's hot here! We had a Kansas town yesterday beat the national high at 114 degrees. That's not uncommon for our area, either. Although we did not get that high yesterday here where I live, but we were into the low 100's. I think we were at 106 yesterday... Just wanted to mention, yesterday, a lot of people I know here in KS lost birds due to the heat. Make sure your birds have shade through out the entire day, plenty of water and if possible, fans or water misters. I prefer the Cobra water misters. I have them set up in all my pens. They are supposed to keep the temperature around them 20 degrees cooler!
LL

I picked one up today at Home Depot. $7.98. They had a display set up but only one for sale, so maybe call first.
It's going to be back in the 90s on Wed so we will get it ready tomorrow.
GREAT IDEA!!! THANKS HAWKEYE95!!

Quote: I think I may pick one or two of these up! We don't get hot very often here in WA state but for that price I could have them for those rare times, or anytime my girls seem hot.
They aren't used to the heat so they start to pant as it approaches 80. Very cool! Thanks for sharing!

Can anyone tell me about the color Gray Lace for a Silkie? I purchased a hen locally and the owner called her a Gray Lace. I haven't seen any postings using that color name.

I've never heard of it...Not sure how you would get any sort of lacing on silkie feathering. Do you have a picture of her?

Place jugs in areas of constant shade. Broody hens need special care in the heat. I provide food and water in reach. It also keeps them from losing so much weight. I think frozen jugs maybe especially helpful in high humidity.

I wonder if you set up something like the old ice boxes with ice or frozen milk jugs over the top of the nesting boxes so the cool air drifts down on them. What do you think?
