Silkie thread!

All of my roos are much friendlier to chicks than the hens! My White roo "Mr. Boss" tends to his babies like a mama. When they were littler, and got scared or cold, they would all run to him and stand between his legs, and he would fan out his wings to cover them. So cute! I really love the roos, I feel they have much more personality than the hens. My hens, or at least some of them, can be quite the bullies when introducing new and younger birds to the flock; the roos could care less.
I have a rooster that takes care of the chicks also. Actually, both of them do. Curly more so than the little splash guy who just likes to feed the chicks. Curly takes his job as a dad very seriously! lol Just the other night, we had moved our silkies to a new pen. Now their coop has a ramp they have to walk up. Three of the chicks just couldn't figure out how to get in the coop and they were very upset. Curly stayed out with them and I swear he was trying to show those chicks how to walk up the ramp!

Poor babies just didn't get it. I had to go and catch them all, put them on the ramp and guide them up to their coop. I guess that was enough for them to figure it out because we haven't had any ramp problems since.

Hi, I'm new to this thread. I just adopted what I believe to be a Silkie cross of some sort. The lady I got him from wasn't sure as well. I just know she had another identical to him that is supposedly a hen, but I couldn't tell. He's my profile pic.

Welcome! If you post some pictures, some of the breeders on here may be able to give you some feedback. Tina

I first look at feet-- that is a must. Check that they have all 5 toes on each leg. No extra nails, etc. If that is okay they move on. If not-- they are gone. From there, I'm checking wings-- most of mine have nice big crests anyway. But I do think the crest is important. If it was on the smaller side for a crest, I'm not so sure I'd keep it. Look for split wing when they get older. That is a DQ, and don't breed with that. I agree with Peep-- type is also very important. My birds that don't look "quite right"... I just sell them off. My goal is not to have tons of birds, but the best birds. Even if that means I sell off over half of what I breed. I've already been selling chicks with obvious faults. But the rest, I'm ify on and I'm going to keep them at least until October to see how they turn out and then sell them off, too.
My babies are already a week old and are growing some little wing feathers. THEY ARE GOING TO BE GORGEOUS! I can't believe our luck. I was going to sell the ones that I couldn't keep, but I may just keep them all and grow them out to see what I get. I have a large shed that is completely empty and could easily be converted into a coop. When will I be able to definitely tell about their wings? Between 8 and 12 weeks? I'm actually so impressed with the chicks that I hatched, I am thinking of hatching another dozen. Hubby won't like it, but my daughter will love it.
