Silkie thread!

I first look at feet-- that is a must. Check that they have all 5 toes on each leg. No extra nails, etc. If that is okay they move on. If not-- they are gone. From there, I'm checking wings-- most of mine have nice big crests anyway. But I do think the crest is important. If it was on the smaller side for a crest, I'm not so sure I'd keep it. Look for split wing when they get older. That is a DQ, and don't breed with that. I agree with Peep-- type is also very important. My birds that don't look "quite right"... I just sell them off. My goal is not to have tons of birds, but the best birds. Even if that means I sell off over half of what I breed. I've already been selling chicks with obvious faults. But the rest, I'm ify on and I'm going to keep them at least until October to see how they turn out and then sell them off, too.

That is a shame! I've bought a batch of eggs and NOTHING hatched! Sometimes that is just what happens. I just jumped right back in and bought more eggs. You have some good hatches and bad off of shipped eggs. They are going thru a lot of bouncing around at the PO. If you were having fertility issues though-- no growth, find another breeder to buy eggs from.

You also could have had incubator problems. If they started hatching on day 21 your temp was probably good but your humidity during the first 18 months could have been to high which makes for a small air space in the egg and chicks drown. Or your humidity during hatch may have been too low and and they dry out in the shell. Hygrometers and thermostats can be way off.

this is my little baby blackberry. i was wondering if any one could tell me if he is good show quality. and if any one could make a guess on if it is a boy or girl. his feathers are still coming in on his head a bit. he is almost 9 weeks old.
4 months is a good time to evaluate show quality and sometimes that is too early. Some birds don't mature for a year.

I am still learning about DQ's. Is there anywhere that I would be able to find a quick reference of DQ's that may possibly show pics?
When choosing chicks, can you get an accurate idea of whether or not your chick will have nice tight wings or loose wings? I have one chick from my recent hatch that has VERY pretty feet, all 5 toes are beautifully feathered, but her crest isn't as large as some of the other chicks that I have.
We had a good discussion on this a while back. https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/297632/silkie-thread/20830#post_9201185

X2. I was incubating for about 3 months and killing everything and had no idea. I was using the therm that came with the incubator at first-- it was WRONG. Then I bought another one and adjusted my machine to it. Unfortunately, it was reading 3 degrees too low-- which meant I was cooking everything I was putting in since I had adjusted it too high and didn't know. I then did some spot checks with my BBT therm, which I know is accurate and saw my mistake. I then bought 4 more therms and put them in there, found that two were reading consistent and right on what my spot checks were. I tossed the other therms and got a good Hygrometer and finally had great hatches every time! I keep the humidity right around 20-50% during the first 18 days. I start off at 50% and let it drop and do dry incubating (my channels are dry) BUT my humidity is holding right around 30%. When it drops to around 20%, then I fill my channels again with water. When it comes time to pip, I bump my humidity as high as I can-- up to 75%. I will add wet towels-- anything to keep it up. Keep in mind, check your air sacs to be sure they are getting bigger and if not, adjust your humidity lower to make sure they are growing in size. I do tweaking during my hatches all the time.
