Silkie thread!

below are many examples of partridge, and a reminder at how big of a variation is out there....

below is my just shy of 6 month old Titus :)

two pullets (4 and 5 months old) - both Partridge

most of my adult flock, all reg. partridge

Heres a slightly older picture of some of my younger birds (last month) - theres a blue boy with red leakage in the middle...He's weird, and I didn't breed him so I don't know where he come from...in the bottom right is a light blue (she looks lavender) and beside her the only blue partridge out of the whole pile...the one beside her looks bluish, but is a tiny older girl i have who is molting, making her underfluff prominent and making her look bluish than blackish.

I think I just assumed that partridge was like the regular blue gene like I have a solid dark blue hen that looks black. So in partridge that isn't the case?

it looks like a genetic oospie that popped out of the BBS pen. according to genetic gurus blacks usually are melanized partridge, and its actually pretty common to get partridgey chicks out of blue pens...so theres an extra gene expressing itself in this guy causing the gold leakage. If you were to breed it to partridge or blue partridge - it would be project worthy for sure. I get chicks similar to this from blue X partridge for the first generation
well, that's what I was wondering if it might have come out of the BBS pen, because the breeder seemed surprised but did say that she did have blue partridge, even though that isn't what I ordered.

i am going to get a splash silkie in a month or two.

Gorgeous! I think I really like the regular partridge color the best, though.

What a cutie!! Are you seeing any pencilling yet?
I'm not... that or I don't know what to look for. There are lines around the eyes, but there is nothing interesting going on in the body, except for the gold leakage on the breast.

So I just noticed one of my porcelain chicks is forming a mild cross beak or twisting of the beak.
He/she is 5 weeks old. This chick was sold to me as BQ. Is this something that would not shown up at 1 week old and it was fine then but now is twisting.

yeah, I knew it was a project color, but that's about all i know of it. I know I 'accidentally' hatched this thing, too! LOL Okay-- just went out to get a picture, this is what it looks like now: (It was trying to escape and getting ready to fly-- so ignore the crazy poses)

That's right. They would not have known, because it doesn't show up until about 6-8 weeks of age. This means that your bird is definitely not a breeder quality, but now a Pet quality. Just hope it's a girl so you can keep it as an egg layer and a broody... but don't breed it!

There is a difference between a cross and a twist. I've been reading that a twist is from positioning in the shell and a cross is genetic. I have one with a twist-- which is *supposed* to not be genetic, but I still would never breed that bird. I'm hoping it turns out to be a pullet so I can sell it to someone in town who want a pretty little egg layer, but nothing more. My beak issue showed up right at 6 weeks.

ETA-- just wanted to add, that NO ONE has any business selling a chick as a BQ or SQ before the age of at least 6-8 months of age. There is no way you can see how they will develop or fill in. That was irresponsible of them to tell you that it would be a BQ bird. But there is also no way they would have known about the beak.

Thank you! :)

Figured I'd show you a picture of my bird--- this is a "twist". I don't have a picture of a cross-- but that is where the top and bottom beak cross and don't meet up together anymore. My bird-- BOTH the upper and lower beak twist in the same direction and still fit together perfectly. It's the strangest thing. This is a great picture of one of my birds:

That is what is happeing to this one. It is not as twisted .... yet, but mine is younger. I paid ALOT for the BQ chick. Dont think I will deal with them again and they sell on here that how I found them. They had their BQ priced twice as much as their PQ. This is advertised on their website. You did answer my next question.... no breeding. Now I am down to only 3 others. I got paints also and I lost one of those within a day I brought it home. I told the breeder and nothing. Should at least gave me 1/2 back or something. :(. You are alway
