Silkie thread!

Someone, please tell me you have seen pullet silkie chicks do the chest bump challenge before! I went out to watch them this morning and witnessed the Challange. I already have two roo babies from the three LF chicks, so two roo babies from the Silkies would just be depressing.

Yesterday was very bittersweet for me... I had to thin my flock down to only whites... I was able to keep my blue hen, Ms. Rumpy, a black hen named Psyco and my first gen SG hen Louise. I also went to an auction yesterday. There was one lot that no one bid on! The lowest anyone can bid per bird is 50 cents... I raised my hand and bought the pair of week old silkie chicks that were inside.

Have I told you all about my how wonderful my rumpied silkie hen, Ms. Rumpy is? Well, about a week ago I took her from her ducklings, they were starting to pluck her alive, and put her back in with my other silkies. Out of curiosity yesterday, I put the two unwanted chicks in with Ms. Rumpy. I rubbed them under her wing first so they would smell like her and she would think they were hers... and....

*drum roll please!*

Rumpy took the babies! I went out to grab a few photos for you guys this morning and got attacked by an angry mother hen! And I was happy to get attacked!

Now the auction said they were white, but I think they are a creame or splash... their feathers have an orangish sheen to them I'm not sure my cam could pick up on and one has a small black spot near it's wing.

In the box on the way home, I added the napkins so they were a little cleaner for the 45 minute ride home.

Ms. Rumpy guarding her brood. I love this special looking bird!

As I haven't had silkies for very long, I can't say that I have, but I've seen pullets of my other breeds (slw, oegb) get all up in each others face, raise their hackles, fly at each other, etc. while establishing the pecking order. I have a year old slw who is the top hen, and she lets everyone know it, even my lab if he happens to stray to close to her mightiness, by raising her hackles and trying to flog him! And she is most definitely a hen. Our slw rooster has his job of protecting the flock cut out for him

this is my new hen she is going on 3. i was wondering if she is bearded and at what age she will slow down laying?? does age look accurate?
That's a bearded hen. Actually looks just like our 2 white hens but they're non-bearded. lol
I don't know about the egg laying, at what age it slows down. Hopefully someone else can answer this for you.

I'm fairly new to chickens also, but I'm pretty sure I remember seeing all my chicks chest bump last year and most of them turned out to be hens. My chicks from this year are all going at it as well. I'm pretty sure I remember someone saying that girls do this too, not just the boys.

Ms. Rumpy reminds me of my first Silkie, Mini Me. lol She was a black hen, was missing a couple of toes because the ducks she lived with before I adopted her, picked on her and her sister waaay too much. Mini Me was awesome! And she got her name because I have chicken legs so someone being a smarty pants made a comment saying "Are you going to name one of them Mini Me?" I did.

I'd be interested to know what colors those chicks turn out. Post us more pictures when they get older!

If she's going on three, egg production should be slacking off already. In my experience, hens in general lay best the first two years and slow down from there.
