Silkie thread!

There was a woman at the show I was at today with 2 cochinXsilkie pullets, they were GORGEOUS! They were white with black lacing on their bodies and cute little white heads and crests. She is going to breed some more for pets because everyone is commenting on how beautiful they are.
that how that pretty much what smooth sizzle is

I read something before about when a black bird feathers in with white wing tips, but is black as an adult that it shows something about it's genetics. Something about the E allele but I don't remember what it was. Can someone tell me what that means and break it down in layman's terms please. =)

I'm not seeing my reply to you two so I'm going to try again (will probably forget something)

Quote: Thank you Flower and Aoxa,

I'm not sure to hope for sickness or cold/wet as the cause for her demise. Either one has it own problems. I'm watching the flock and hoping there's no illness spreading (esp. with the rain we got this weekend). Normal-feathered birds have a bit of oil that allows water to roll off them - do silkies have this same ability/oiliness?

The bantams hadn't been having a heat lamp (first in the house when we got her at around 4-5 weeks old, then later in the coop for the past 8 or so weeks - she was 15 weeks old when she died) so she should have been getting used to the falling temps, plus she usually snuggled with the d'uccles that she came home with.

For next time:
First, I'll try to get spring hatched chickens and get a minimum of 3. That way, they have the fullest amount of feathers available. Plus they will have each other for warmth.

Second, I'm going to try waiting until 2014 when my laying flock will need replacing so the silkies can have that space (bantam coop and big coop are at capacity and I don't want to crowd). Either that or need to have fewer D'uccles (4x4 coop with 9 in it now).
DS1 has said that he wants a different color; she was good type (
IMO untrained as it may be) but he loved her and her color so he wants to change because of his memories. Don't know what he'll choose.

so thankful for all the information posted. I having a silkie setting some Jersey eggs. I went to check on her yesterday and noticed her eyes were crusted shut. I looked into it and found out that she might have mites, so I washed her face with a q-tip and baby shampoo, put on some neosporin, dusted her. (did find black specks but only around her neck and face.) Removed all the litter dusted the coop and added d.e. Put some vitamens in her water since she seems healthy other wise. I never knew because silkies pile they are more prone to mites, lice and fleas. I am very glad for all the information. It probably saved her life and the life of the Jerseys she is hatching. I was told to try frontline spray 3 drops so i will do that next. Have to admit. My Jerseys are a lot easier to maintain, lol! But did their pen also just in case.

Most likely E or E^R allele, which are the blackest, most correct black birds.
