Silkie thread!

thanks :)

well, I'm going to attempt to do something today. my poor 3 y old has been sitting at the tv while I've scoured the internet all morning long. I sure hope I don't lose many more birds. at this point in the day I won't be going to the feed store until this afternoon. hopefully I can find what I'm looking for while I'm there.

the lady I got the silkies from for my son has offered to give me a group of 8, isn't she sweet? definitely not until everyone is 100% feeling well though. she has too many and she was goign to put them on craigslist, but she wanted to do something nice for Christmas. isn't she sweet? <3 I don't know if we will or not. I'll have to wait and see what happens, if any more die I guess. My silkie pile needs to be big enough to keep them warm for the winter. if one more dies then I might get them, I dont' know. my husband will have a cow I think.

Sheeshshe on the necropsy you can mail the bird in and they can give you directions on how to do that. I hope you don't need to.
Ivermectin will not kill Cecil worms nor tapeworms and I have read large roundworms have been showing resistance. Valbazen is in the cattle section. I think Safeguard would be a good second choice. Check with Dawg. Just my two cents I wish you the best of luck whatever you decide.

thanks :)

She does sound like a very nice lady. :)

Right now I would keep any showing the slightest signs of weakness away from the general population until you have it sorted out.

Any chance that the ones getting sick and skinny are not eating because of poor vision or bullying?

I mailed dawg, hopefully he'll respond by this afternoon. if not, I'll go with whatever I can find I guess!!!

they said they didn't have the valbazen when I called. I asked if they had ivermectin and they said yes. I didnt' ask about safeguard bc I couldn't remember what it was called on the phone LOL>

couldI put pyretherine on the ground or however that is spelled? would that kill worm eggs? or just does it only kill lice eggs?

Please let us know what Dawg says.
For the ground in your run I would make a deep litter type environment with leaves and pine needles that the poo will detearate naturley in. If you put the permethrin all over the run you kill the good bugs too that feed on the bad bugs. It's a insecticide so I don't think it will kill worms. If you think there's a problem with mites/ lice you could put it in their dust path. Wood ash is a good natural way to get rid of lice/ mites as long as its dry. Scaly leg mite i would use Nustock.
The deep litter method will make much healthier soil brings good earth worms and yummy bugs to the surface for themto scratch up and eat. And entertains them. I rake up lots of leaves and pine needles and good forest top soil comes with it, throw it in their run and they have a hay day scratching around in it. Every now and then I throw a handful of bird seed, scratch or meal worms in the leaves for them to find. They love it. It's much better then the hard packed ground that the poo just sits on top.

But, I read somewhere that earthworms and mealworms can be a carrier of parasitic worms, is it a catch 22? am I over thinking things to death? I'd love to haul in a bunch of leaves in there, they love digging in it. problem is, we can never find enough, not sure how since we live in the woods! but, I'll have the kids help me find some :)
