Silkie thread!

Only got 2 new pictures of the silkies. Most are in confinement due to stupidity. (ie: Standing out in the rain/snow and getting drenched - bad idea when they can't dry off in time for roost).

The only allowed to range are three boys. Steve is in with the girls. I'm sure he would not like being apart from them.

Did you already do this? I'd show her as buff and see what the judges say. In the last picture she looks like a washed out buff to me.

I ended up putting her down as porcelain. She looks like a dark porcelain to me the most. I had to overnight it.

I really hate having mine cooped up all winter :( they don't like the snow and now their door is frozen shut. blah!

I am new here, just signed up today. I am pretty new to silkies..well any chickens at all. I got my 6 silkie chicks (were about 1 week old)the end of may 2012. At 7 mo old now they have been living in a 8x5x7 foot enclosed coop with fence. I use thick pine shavings for bedding. I live in central-southern Minnesota, getting pretty cold now so have 2 lamps in coop red and white. Feed is layer. Know for sure 1 is a roo. 1 for sure is laying eggs daily. Today found 1 chicken sitting in a corner, it didnt want to move. When I picked it up and moved it, it cannot stand. Legs move, no signs of injury. I brought it inside and been keeping it warm, giving it water, bread and applesauce. Help!

poor babies. I won't let them out of the coop area anymore after one was killed by a hawk.

I used to have quite a few silkies but one night i had a raccoon problem...it was not a good morning for me.. i only have one left and he is my rooster. i am hoping to get more soon they are one of my favorite birds.

Welcome to the tread! Sorry that your bird is out of sorts. Lots of folks lately on here lately, are having illness pop up suddenly in their birds.

Here are a couple of things I have done for sick birds:
Seperate the bird and bring it inside out of the cold, and put under a heat lamp
Apply VetRx to the nostrils and comb daily
Give 1/2dropperful of baby vitamins without iron (PolyViSol brand is good) once daily
Give 400 units of Vit E up to 3 times daily
Mash up a hard boiled egg and serve with dried powdered milk sprinkled on top
Give an Epsom salt spa bath as directed on www.hencam.com

Some folks would also give antibiotics or treat for coccidiosis, worms etc.

It's the infamous lion head silkie!
