Quote: Since she did NOT come from BBS breeding, I would not use her unless you want mixed colour chicks. But since she isn't laying, certainly hold on to her and acquire a white boyfriend for her for later when she is older.

The wry tailed chick is still so young and tiny. And it seemed to appear so suddenly after the Welsummer broke into the pen, but I can't be sure it isn't genetic. I'm not yet sure if I will keep her or not.As far as I know, it is always either genetic of injury. Since it first showed up after an older bird terrorized the youngsters, I would certainly not discount the idea of injury. But I would also not count on it. If you want, do a small test hatch, realizing that the offspring would likely inherit if it is not injury. Wry tail, like tweak beak does not usually show up until the bird is older.
Awesome -that is something I want to hear. And I can do that. I've hatched and re-homed more roosters this year. I'm dissappointed that I maybe won't get to keep the blue pullet because of her wry tail but at least I'll get a head start on a future white breeding pen by keeping the white pullet. And I wouldn't even mind mixed color chicks for people that just want pets. Thank you!Since she did NOT come from BBS breeding, I would not use her unless you want mixed colour chicks. Yes I am very fortunate! She currently has two special needs cases from me. A very weird foot cockerel and the wry tail barred rock pullet. The pullet I gave her was from a hatchery and not bred from my own birds, so at least I don't have that to worry about. You're right -that's not what I want to hear- but I know you are right. It is SO frustrating trying to build up a pen. This last hatch was 4 more roosters, 1 white pullet (I think) and 1 blue pullet (Smokey). I might as well sell all of them because my goal is to have a Blue/Black/Splash pen. I'm literally down to Mysty Blue (blue hen) and Leo Pierre (a splash rooster). I've got 4 of Mysty Blues eggs developing in the incubator, though.Would you just get rid of the six 3-month old chicks if you could find a good home? aoxa, you are fortunate to have a special care place!![]()
I've been hoping it would just go away. Yesterday I thought it looked better but then after watching and staring at her for awhile realized that it was the same. She is such a cutie with a bonnet crest and good type like my partridge girl. I wish I could post pictures, but my computer won't let me today.![]()
Thanks for clearing that up. I wasn't sure on that.As far as I know, it is always either genetic of injury. I'd at least hang on to her for a while longer to see if it corrects itself. The wry tailed chick is still so young and tiny. And it seemed to appear so suddenly after the Welsummer broke into the pen, but I can't be sure it isn't genetic. I'm not yet sure if I will keep her or not.

My thinking was if Ginger pecked her in the tail/back area maybe the muscles are sore and she was favoring that side. But I don't know. I had a friend in grade school that had scoleosis (curvature of the spine) and she wore a brace that corrected the curve. My mom had it too and they did surgery on her. I've thought of putting some sort of brace on the blue chick...but I realize it's just a chicken. It might just be a case of wry tail. So far, she seems very happy and normal other than the tail growing sideways.Yes I am very fortunate! She currently has two special needs cases from me. How could an injury cause wry tail though? That seems like it would be a broken back healing like that if an injury. How else would it turn? Just a few questions![]()
I have scoliosis as well. Though it's more at the top of my back. Doesn't affect me in many ways other than my posture. My thinking was if Ginger pecked her in the tail/back area maybe the muscles are sore and she was favoring that side. But I don't know. I have a splash chick that somehow got in the turkey pen when it was just a few days old. Of course it got picked on, lost vision in one eye and had quite a gash right by it's tail feathers. Now she has a slight why tail. I don't know if something broke and healed up crooked or something else happened. Not sure. Otherwise she's a healthy, happy chick and loves people. How could an injury cause wry tail though? That seems like it would be a broken back healing like that if an injury. How else would it turn? I also have scoliosis. Mine is mild but I have back aches and that sort of stuff sometimes. Doesn't help that I've been launched off of several horses un the last 21 years of riding.I have scoliosis as well. Though it's more at the top of my back. I don't think a brace would do her any good to be honest. Not sure how you'd fit her with one either.
Oooh, I am SO sorry about your little pullet. You did the right thing since she was suffering though. She is a beautiful chick.

I can't imagine that a brace would help a chicken either. How would you even design a brace for a chicken that would fit right?
