Silkie thread!

Sorry, I couldn't bring up your quote but I loved it Keric. It's a good thing no one ever told me you couldn't sight sex Silkies until they crowed or laid an egg. I would have laughed in their face.
I live in a remote region and few people have anything but hatchery Silkies. I've raised Silkies off and on for years.
I got my first Silkie and Cochin chicks from a small farm called 'Chicks R Us' when their place was in Everett, Washington. Mr. Olson used to be the president of the biggest Poultry club in my state. Washington Feather Fanciers. I've never forgot that small farm. It was spotless, beautifully manicured and the barn, pens, and hatch room something from dreams! They moved and went into the Emu buisness and sadly I learned he passed away only a couple years after. July of 1999 I believe.
Those Olson Silkie and Cochin chicks were gorgeous. The best I've ever raised. My daughter won Best of Breed and Best Bantam with a little white pullet from that group of chicks first show. I learned a lot from those Olson birds.
Experience is the best teacher. I'm not a master breeder of Silkies and I sure don't know everything about chickens but I do know this. I know my own chicks.

I've been saying my Phyllis was a she from week six I believe. She still hasn't laid an egg, but there is no doubt in my mind. Same with Gretta (white silkie). Though very few of my silkies ever fought, the only ones that seemed to really go at it were the boys.

Here is Scotty Mac @ 4 weeks old. I remember looking at these pictures and thinking he was a he.

Especially when I looked at his sister Gretta.

I am soooo excited!! I have Catdance silkie eggs coming! They should be here tomorrow. I also have about a dozen or so of my silkie eggs in the incubator , alnog with a few Olive Egger eggs and cochin eggs. These ones should hatch around the 27th and then my Catdance eggs should hatch about a week later! My kids are very excited too!!

Babies form her yet Peep? Would love a peek!

I have one that is now 7 weeks and the others pictured are 5 weeks and many more on the way! Can't stop hatching!! I will be selling them as soon as they are old enough to ship. They look porcelain now but will be much darker. Dad is porcelain carrying partridge and of course lavender so the chicks may carry lav also. They are really pretty and fun babies. :)

YAY!!! My silkie eggs I got on this site will be hatching on Thursday! I'm so excited. I had two batches going, my own silkies, and the ones I got in the mail- will you be using 2 incubators? I had to, since my eggs were close to hatching when I put my new silkie eggs in and the humidities were to be different.

Educate the uneducated, please!
Who are some of the best Silkie breeders out there? Who has the best of the best? I want to order more eggs!

I have been very happy with Catdance. Many top breeders do not sell eggs.
My four week class is finished. It was a great learning experience. Fun too.

I'll post some of the pictures I took for my class. Sorry guys, they're not chicken related.

If you look me up on Facebook, I have some public folders for everyone to see..like this one for example http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.1192534646511.31027.1022749684&type=3. In desperate need of new pictures though.

Artistically, my favorite is the tortie cat.
How do you know you have a blue partridge as opposed to just a blue? Are blue and self blue the same?
Blue partridge have gold and penciling. Blue do not.

Me too!! We have Spirit and her brother Salem. Salem is about 3x the size of Spirit.

Plus we have an orange one, so every day around here is like Halloween! Not sure where our diluted calico fits in yet...

Beautiful.

Every day should be like Halloween when you have black cats. Mine actually showed up the night before Halloween when we were carving pumpkins. She literally came right to the door. Go figure.
The calicos fit in because they have black. I have two of them!

I'm well on my way of becoming the crazy cat & chicken lady.

Here is one of my blue hens. She is molting terribly, but you can see how dark she is in comparison to the next picture (from the American Bantam Association).

That's a blue?? Or a self blue?

I have some Catdance chicks growing. I was thinking of ordering one more batch from a different breeder.
