Silkie thread!

Quote: I've hatched in cartons for years, and I know a number of other folks who do as well. But it probably depends on the type of incubator you have.
I think that whether you hatch in a carton or lay down, depends on how the eggs were incubated. I use holders in my incubator so the eggs are always upright, and then use cartons in the hatcher. I've tried to put them on their side in the hatcher with bad results.

If your eggs are incubated on their sides, then I would keep them like that & not put them in a carton.

Anyways, it makes sense to me.

I have a turner. I put them on their sides. 100% hatch this go around.

But I don't think there's anything wrong with hatching in cartons, I would just not do it, as why fix what's not broken? Not broken for me at least. :)

I'm still looking for a silver partridge or grey cockerel or rooster.

I am beginning to wonder how the greys got approved, because no one seems to have any boys! LOL

I am going to the NEPC next week. Or, I will accept shipping....

What's a good feed for Silkies? I have some that I'd like to show in April and I changed them off the layer pellet to a 16% crumble. I'm not really sure what else to add in there to help them out. I've been reading all sorts of things but my head is starting to spin.

I never was good at any of this nutrition stuff...humans or animals.
I mixed up some shell less sunflower seed in the crumble. I was also told flax seed is good for them. Now the problem is, I don't know what any of this is. I do know that the sunflower seed is a good source of protein. What does the flax seed do?

Oh, a woman I bought some Cochins from, recomended this for a feed: 20% crumble (which our feed store didn't sell), Sea Kelp concentrate, Flax Seed, Wheat Germ, and Brewers yeast.
How's that for a mix?

I also read all the fermented feed -talk you guys had in this thread. I don't want to start up on that sort of a 'project' just yet and confuse our staff.

It's not rocket science if I were to make the feed, all they have to do is feed the birds, but sometimes even a simple task like that that seems very difficult for some people around here.
