Silkie thread!

Yeah that would work good. I have some hay I could throw in there too when I reheat the heatpad. Think that would be good? They have deep shavings but they got packed down.
Sure! Hay is fine if that is what you have on hand. Packed shavings are fine, they will just add even more insulation to the bottom of the coop.

I think you have asked about the age of the white silkie chick from the Congress? I know that Stoopid and Marquesilla(spellng?) were bringing silkies and other breeds of chicks. If you contact them, one may be able to help you.

SIlkies can and will learn to use ramps or steps. You may need to teach them, though. I like coops that I can stand up in; makes cleaning MUCH easier. Exactly what works for you depends more on your location (climate) and things unique to your situation than on hte breed of chickens.
I also prefer walk in coops. My daughter and sister are disabled and it is very easy for them to go in the coop and enjoy the chickens. I find a walk in coop to be so much easier on my back. It is really fun and therapeutic to sit out with the chickens.

Have to share my newly hatched self-blues. I'm so in love!!

You have such lovely babies!

If proper ventilation is provided, no. I have some big honking combs too :)

Just gorgeous!

I quoted marquisella when I asked about the age if she was the one selling them, but she didn't respond. I got it out of a plastic storage bin thing with 3 drawers, the baby came from the top drawer. They were the only chicks under a week old I saw at the show. There were blue copper marans and coronation sussex in with it.

What a gorgeous field (backyard ?) you have! All that open space makes me nervous, though -like a hawk is going to swoop down on those pretty silkies. I KNOW they can't free range all day out in the open.
It's one of our pastures. We have 44 acres total, 40 acres of pasture/woods, and a 4 acre pond. I love all the space, but I agree about the nervousness--hawks have been my main predator out here. Haven't had an attack in quite a while. I only let my flock free range if I'm there to keep an eye on them.

Not even a hint of frost bite detected.

It's how I roll. Lots of ventilation. No insulation. No heat lamps.

Silkies are in the pen to the left of this photo until I can get them separated for breeding season. My big barred rocks have mated my silkie hen.. as did a big NN rooster.

Scares me.. Don't want them getting hurt.
I see you have a flock watching chair in your coop too.

Peeps, they are so sweet! Um, you did notice the chipmunk stripes on the back, right? That's just like 3 of my new chicks..........does that mean some of yours have a partridge gene too? Mine will be 3 weeks old tomorrow and I'm trying to take lots of pictures to see how they change and turn out.
The parents had these as babies also. I don't know the genetics behind them. I'm trying to find out. :D
Ok, I'm sort of a newbie. Can anyone explain to me what self-blue means? BTW , incredibly cute chicks!
Self-blue, often referred to as lavender, is the newest of the stand silkie colors and is a pale blue of the same shade all over the bird. They some times have a lavender cast. Here's a photo of the chicks mother.

Kayla, I'm not sure Marquisella is on BYC often. If you send a PM to Stoopid (Roberta), you might be able to find out. Both of these ladies were bringing marans for sale in addition to silkies.

Many thanks to everyone for all the sweet comments on my self-blue chicks!! You guys are awesome!!

Judith, Your flock is looking particularly lovely. Your patience and work has paid off.

Do you guys know if it's going to be a bad thing for me to use my humidifier for the silkies with Oxine and then use if in the house for humans after chicken treatment. Of course I'll clean it up first before using it in the house, but is the Oxine something humans shouldn't breathe in?
