Silkie thread!

my chicks are here!!!
i ended up with 2 blue silkies bantams, 1 dominique, 1 ancona, 1 cukoo maran, 1 welsummer, 1 easter egger, and 1 Mille Fleur d'Uccle Bantam. I found out that they are all supposed to be straight run but if i end up with any roosters the feed store i bought them at will replace them with other chicks if i want pullets.

How do you even tell if a silkie is male or female without waiting for the crowing? If i need any swapped out i want to do it sooner rather then later.

:barnie MY HEAT LAMP JUST CRAPPED OUT! Its not the bulb or the outlet its plugged into, I'm not sure what happened and I don't have another lamp :( I brought Tina inside to the chick brooder, gave her the 2 unhatched eggs I had left in the bator (should hatch tomorrow) and the chick that's dry and fluffy. The other two that hatched today are still wet so I'm leaving them in the bator for now.
I'm a little concerned though. Tina is letting the chick under her to warm, and she's content sitting on the eggs, but she isn't talking to the peeping chick at all. I'm also not sure how she's going to act when/if those eggs hatch :/
I'm afraid she isn't going to take care of the chicks. Guess I'll just wing it and see if I can figure out what's up with the lamp. WHY!?!?!?

Ok, editing this: I fixed the lamp. The part where the light bulb makes contact with the lamp had some corrosion on it (I've had the thing forever). So the brooders warm again. Tina did a swell job of keeping the chick warm while I was working out that problem, but she was starting to get a little testy by the time I'd fixed it. So, two chicks are in the brooder basking in the warmth of the lamp, Tina is happy and back on her eggs in the coop. I probably ruined the last two eggs that were left in the bator by taking them out and giving them to her and then putting them back though :( Oh well, guess I'll have to wait and see. One chick left drying off in the incubator. After all of this hulla-baloo, I'm so done hatching for a while. I'll leave Tina to her eggs and if the other hens want to hatch so be it. Its easier left to the hens!

awesome...love that everyone is hatching babies...

thanx! yea if u use red it will prevent cannibalism because they cant see any blood from on another chick they pick at anything red

My two cockerels, fathers to the eggs cooking right now. Macho is in the back, the 'other guy' is in front. The other guy is nice enough, he just doesn't have the chest and fluff action that Macho does. He also has a missing toenail on each foot, it's like the feathering grew over them.

Macho again. I don't like that little smidgeon of a wattle popping out

Great! Such a nice girl!
Thank you!
I put her out in the pen with the rest of the flock today for the first time. I was expecting for the roosters to come out and do their rooster dances, but NOBODY cared!! They always make a fuss of a new hen. I don't know why they didn't react to Iris in anyway. Maybe they thought it was Lila, she's the same blue as Iris, just smaller. Would the boys really be that confused?

I'll have to take some pictures of the crew tomorrow.
