Silkie thread!

mathmatically .... you need at least 4 square feet per chicken and you have 65521 square feet in 1 1/2 acres that means for the chicken lover you can only have 16380 chickens until you start building a second story.:lau

Hmmmm.... I like this chicken math I have about a hundred acres so I think I should share this with my faimily !!!!! They will thoroughly enjoy that lol

I have had 2 cases of pasty butt on my black silkie already! I have started using ACV, i make sure that their water isnt too cold...is there something im missing?

6 babies hatched! 3 lavenders, 1 porcelain, 1 buff, 1 blue or black lavender split. They dried crusty, like with egg on them (?) The pic shows some shavings on it, that was after I put them in brooder, once I saw that they were as dry as they were going to get. Wanna brush them with a toothbrush. As long as they have heat they will preen themselves fluffy eventually...it takes a little longer but they are fine with goo on them as they only look like they have a little...
Just hatched my first silkie chicks ( i have a showgirl rooster but this is my first time with chicks) I am curious to see what actually hatches I bought the eggs from ebay and the ad states that the eggs are from "blue, black, buff, splash, paint, white, partridge, showgirl, sizzle, frizzle showgirl" all free ranging together. here are the first 3 chicks (4 pics of each) and i have 5 eggs still pipping in the incubator. I am hoping they are all at least close to "correct" i have noticed that the 5th toe on the mostly white chick is a bit smaller than the other two chicks 5th toe and he is light skinned even compared to the other whitish chick who actually does have a bluish tint to his skin. how do you tell the comb type at this age or do you have to wait? super excited to learn more about silkies- my rooster is just a joy so i am hoping these little ones will be too.
Super cute chicks...they should be fun to watch develop...you'll have some interesting colors...the white with the single comb just don't breed but it'll be cute anyway...congrats
:jumpy Got up at 1 to check the incubator- no sign of any more pipping. Got up at 2- A CHICK! WOOOOOHOOOOOO! My first chick hatched at the farm!!!!!!!!! Pam :celebrate
Congrats on your chicks...can't wait to see them...
All the Silkie chicks were more alert this morning when i walked into the brooding house. Took some pictures with my iPhone of the different colors we got from Murray McMurray.
Wow these are some super cute chicks...love the colors especially from a hatchery...they look great...love the first one....
Congrats!!! I hatch only silkies and they are addictive!!!! The roos are so trainable! My first hatch of the year is due march 5-7th. My top female- HOPE- set aside 25 eggs in her carrier so I didnt have the heart to make her wait till next month to hatch. Needless to say all those eggs were traded for fakes and I gathered 14 for her to hatch hoping to bring out columbian markings in this next hatching. this is her stash....... here she is with another female till I check sat for fertility and then all fertile ones will be hers. hope is on the right angel is on the left...Angel is too young to have a brood yet...maybe next year. this is the brooder indoors ..so easy to clean up, and I can kleep a constant eye on mom and chicks. Hope loves this arrangement ...she calls to me and I clean up or bring a plate for her brood to feast off of.
Love the set up...they look very content...

I kept my silkie eggs to hatch on the kitchen counter, in an egg carton. It was in the 60s in there. I didn't turn them or tilt them or anything, and I gathered them over the course of around 10 days, then put them in the incubator and they hatched fine for me

I have a doz eggs sitting on top of my bator right now that I have been collecting over the week...the bator is on my kitchen counter...I don't turn my eggs while they are waiting to go in...I have a doz paint eggs in the bator on week two all these will go in tomorrow so I will have a staggered hatch....I use two bators...one to incubate and then move them into the other for lockdown...
