As far as hatching it's been horrible! I've had some hatch but out of almost 100 eggs set I've got 15 chicks

I think I ran my humidity too low during days 1-18 and they ended up with too big of an air cell to hatch. Idk really... I just know that I had tons of fully formed chicks that didn't pip and died in the shell. Disappointing big time.

I don't even bring them back to look at my coops/chicken area. If they don't like it, then don't purchase anything from me. Plus, with all these recent silkie thefts I prefer strange people (from craiglist) don't know what else I have.

Recent silkie thefts? What's that all about...? Haven't heard of that yet but the thought has crossed my mind.

There was 2 different people on here that had their birds stolen. Plus another person a little while back. I also heard of it happening around where I live.

I do not allow visitors to the birds. If someone comes to my house they only make it to the front door. No one goes into the backyard where the birds are and the guard dogs. I used to allow visitors, 4hers etc. But after treating the entire flock with meds, over 300+. It got EXPENSIVE!!!! The first time a few birds came down ill, I treated & didn't think it was caused by bio issues, but the second time, 3 days after a visit I said that's it! And have never had visits again, no matter who asks. I feel terrible telling 4hers and newbies sorry you can't see the birds, but it has been better for me, and knock on wood the birds have been Very healthy for years since I closed the doors.

I don't allow visitors for this & bio reasons. I also don't have paperwork id-ing birds on the cages. I don't put band numbers/names on coop cards at shows or on the web, unless that bird is for sale. Pens are not marked as to who is in there, which causes issues for Hubby ( can't tell them apart) but the paperwork is in the house. I try to keep the birds individual info from being public since we show alot and don't want to take a chance of someone seeing Fluffmuffin has won X amount of shows from the website & here he is in this coop with his name on it, Oh I'll just shove him in the cage & walk out.

I've built up somewhat of a nice flock now and have thought about putting padlocks on the coop doors and padlocking the inside of the pop doors. Like you said, once people find out how nice they are, you just never know... and if anyone comes here to buy anything from craigslist or anywhere else, they don't go back to the coops. Just by the house or in the garage. We also have a good guard dog who keeps people on their toes.

I STRONGLY recommend that you NOT allow anyone to come to your barn / home to see your birds. The recent theft, and subsequent return of my Lav roo--Frank--taught me that lesson.

No one comes to my home anymore except true friends, people I have known for years. I still firmly believe it was a previous buyer who took Frank.

That stinks!!!! Sorry, I havent had good luck hatching either, but I want to get some more buffs and blacks, either chicks or breeding stock. Maybe someone can point me in the right direction?

Well if I was not sure now I am 100% sure now of not letting anyone see my chickens or coming into their coops. I don't know people act funny when you tell them you can't they think your hiding something BUT. For the safety of my chickens I am no longer allowing them to see where they are kept or into their coops.

I use to just meet people out..I think that is what I am going to do for now on. Now that I have started with the cuckoo silkies and have invested alot of money into quality roosters ($50 a piece) I need to be a little more confined.

WTA: If you breed a showgirl to a showgirl will all chicks be showgirls? I have never bred showgirl to showgirl only showgirl to regular silkie and I know its 50/50 but with showgirl/showgirl mating will all chicks hatched be showgirl?

I've been setting up a cage on my patio with the birds I have for sale when I have someone coming out to look. That way they have no reason to go to where the rest of my birds are. I typically don't have more than 3 or 4 at a time for sale so this works for me.
