Silkie thread!

Here's one of my little fluffballs.
Sorry she's dirty from the rain we've had, but still cute cute.

She's wearing a little Easter Bonnet already...

I have another broody :barnie
I had to end up kicking the first one out with the rest of the flock because she just wasn't getting it (not to mention she wasted a dozen eggs I could have sold). Now my splash, Ellie Mae, has decided its her turn. I've been trying to break her for the past 2 weeks but she just wont give up. So yesterday I gave her 2 eggs and that's all her fluffy butt is getting. If she hatches, great. If she doesn't, maybe she'll get over it. These crazy girls are driving me insane. WAIT FOR SPRING SILLIES!!!!!

Hi,
It s been a long time since I last wrote, though I keep on reading the thread, which I love.
Im very excited as my girls started laying last weekend, my first ever eggs, = a lot of questions, and no better place to ask for help.
  • How should I store them for breeding, can they be refrigerated? I live in Costa Rica (tropical climate)
  • How long will they be viable?
  • How many eggs can a bantam silkie hatch (max)?
Thanks.

There could be a reason - and that being meat - but I would not call it euthanizing. I don't eat my silkies, but many do - and I don't think there is anything wrong with that.
Yes I wasn't talking about food, if the looks weren't just right. Good to see you back I too have been wondering how your doing. Your little Blue is adorable, I hope it's a Pullet for you.

Me too :)

I just can't imagine eating a black fleshed animal. Just gives me the willies. Kind of like purple ketchup. But to those who love it - all the more to them!

Even other breeds I do eat - I still sell the girls instead of processing if they don't look right. They can make someone a good pet.

I agree, black bones and gray meat

Its so easy to find homes for the hens and so far I haven't had any trouble finding homes for the Roos sometimes it takes a couple weeks.

I'm doing okay thank you :)

This group of chicks is about the slowest growing group I have ever had. Not sure if it was the food (I had them on fermented grower and not starter right away - but switched them when I noticed how slow they were growing) or what.
Yes, he/she does look more like 8 weeks so definitely could be a girl. :D So glad to here you are hanging in there and glad to have you back and sharing your vast knowledge.
Hi all silkie lovers,

Always glad to have another silkie addict in the making!
Curious for opinions from the rest of you breeders. What do you do with your sub-par birds? I assume this comment suggests euthanizing?
Many breeders use the term "cull" to indicate removal from the flock and not destroying necessarily destroying them.

:D Hoping it is a girl then. I will update in a couple weeks.

Yes I will be around. I have some really good white silkies, some blue and some buff on order for May/June. I am starting out with some of the best breeders in Canada, and I can't wait.

Heather Hayes and Jamie Carson. The blues are not top lines as far as I know, but Jamie has them this year.

I really want partridge, but I can't find anyone in Canada with them.
