That's a bummer! Now your post number has to start again...I'm going to have to get used to the name and realize it's you.I don't have a signature line yet. I think I have to wait until I am no longer a "new egg" lol
Wow! So glad it's ok, thanks for sharing.Just wanted to post a picture of the only 2 silkies from my flock that hatched( out of 12). The left one is a white and I'm pretty sure the right one is a splash. I ended up helping the white one hatch. The splash was with a broody silkie, who was a terrible mom.
I went out this morning to open up my chicken coops and was looking for the baby chick. I had figured it had hatched overnight since I last saw it pipping last night. It took a minute but there it was upside down in the shavings, mom had gotten up and went outside. I was very sure it was dead and was telling her she was terrible. When I picked up the baby it was half warmish and half cold.
I put the baby down and finished doing a couple other things. I came inside when I was finished, about 10 to 15 minutes later. I put the baby down thinking that I would put it with the other chick that passed away last month, in a baggie in a freezer. I just happened to look down and it looked like it was gasping for air!
So I cleaned out it's little mouth since there was a small piece of shaving in there. I tried to give it water and vitamins and I rubbed it and stuck it under a heat lamp. I kept rubbing and rubbing it and kept gentley tugging it's legs. I was trying anything I could think of.
I patted it's back and just tried and tried to get it to make a sound.
Finally it peeped! then it's little head kept going under itself, but it was pepping more and more. I figured that it had wry neck or something and I was in for some vitamin therapy for a while. But at this point I just didn't care, I was just happy it was alive.
I put it in a little box, seperate from my other babies, under the heat lamp and left to do the errands I had to do. This took me 45 mintues, but worth every second! To my surprise, when I got home there was this beautiful little splash silkie peeping and standing and looking at me!! I was thrilled!!!
My little dolls!!!
Just think about how I want to breed "reverse paint" silkies (mottled) haha there you go, painted feathers! That's a bummer! Now your post number has to start again...I'm going to have to get used to the name and realize it's you.
I have been thinking about you lately, hoping you are doing ok.I do very much. I am so glad I have a piece of them in these chicks though. Makes all the difference.![]()
Two other people also lost their barns this month and animals inside to fire. It's a very scary reality!
It's a great name!Just think about how I want to breed "reverse paint" silkies (mottled) haha there you go, painted feathers!
Bless you for adopting them. We had two retired racing greyhounds as well. What a joy they were.I may be new to chicken ownership but I've had multiple animals all my life including a number of "retired" racing greyhounds. Many breeders of the racers have a similar opinion - if they race and win, terrific. If they are unable to race or are not fast enough to win, they are euthanized. There's a whole world out here that includes people looking for pets who would be thrilled to adopt these chicks with no intentions of breeding them. My greyhounds were the best pets and gave me so much love. I'm guessing these chicks will have a lot to give too.
I heard about those other barn fires also. I use a drop cord for my incubator and so paranoid about it now. My husband checked it with his multimeter yesterday to make sure it wasn't pulling to much.I do very much. I am so glad I have a piece of them in these chicks though. Makes all the difference.![]()
