When I first got my chickens, they scared they daylights out of me several times with their interesting nap positions.Really?! I'm just beginning to learn about their sleeping habits. I had my girls out for a supervised free range outing yesterday and my dogs were out with us as I did some garden work. I looked over and my splash was laid out in a little patch of green grass, one leg all stretched out behind her and her wing laying loosely beside her. My 75 lb retriever was standing over her. Shear panic overtook me as I rushed to her imagining the worst.Turns out she was just taking a nap. Whew!!!
I had no idea they slept in such akward positions but this picture is proof. LOL!!!![]()
Your girl always cracks me up. She is hilarious LOL
They are so cute!!!!! I especially love the black split lavender. It looks very "manly" with his chest pumping out LOL
Cuties!
Oh my!!! I am so sorry. What is going on with them? Have you tried to contact the breeder?Went out to feed everyone this morning and found Kung Pow(black pullet 14 weeks) dead. No sign of injury. She was fine yesterday when I covered the tractor. HMM. Now I have just theu Blue cockerel and the Porcelain pullet.
It took me a sec to realize it was you LOL. He is gorgeous and perfect! What is the name of your monster beauty? And by the way, how is Silk?

Quote: Thanks everyone. My DW has said no more Silkies. So we/I will try again sometime in the future. She is crushed. 5 of 7 Silkies have died since end of Nov. when we first got them. A little over 3 months time.
Quote: Yes I have emailed the breeder. She is not responding. Chickenlove had a bad experience with her birds from same breeder, she only has one surviving of 8(correct me if I am wrong). I may just need to stop by the breeder's house. She lives a few miles down the road. I am starting to lean toward the fact that she does not vaccinate for Mareks is the main factor. I had one of my backyard chicks(12 weeks) that I had to put down for Marek's(right leg progressing paralasis).
1 left out of 7Thanks everyone. My DW has said no more Silkies. So we/I will try again sometime in the future. She is crushed. 5 of 7 Silkies have died since end of Nov. when we first got them. A little over 3 months time.

Which is why I think it is the lack of vaccination with the strain. Mine were inside until 4 weeks ago. But still lost 2 before that. It is frustrating though. Someday we will try again
That is a shame... I have not had a high mortality rate with my Silkies. I dont vaccinate either but dont lose chicks for the most part except ones that have hatching problems. Thanks everyone. I highly doubt it has anything to do with not vaccinating, but rather bad breeding. I'm none the less so sorry you lost so many! I have not had very good luck with mine either, but they were not all silkies. It does not sound like mareks at all. The breeder I got my first silkies from had mareks, They become unbalanced and disoriented and end up not being able to stand. I would try a different breeder. Thanks everyone. Thank you!!Beauty!
You are kind! But I really do hate it when people change their picture. I so slow to catch on!I always change mine, you end up with better pictures hehe
Haha! My monster beauty's name is Clay. Kind of a drab name, huh? Silk is doing so great! She is back with her flock and though she does lie down quite a bit she can run like crazy on those little stub legs. She has only one toe. She is also the dominant hen of the bunch. She hasn't started laying since she was attacked though and it's been about three months I think. It took me a sec to realize it was you LOL. He is gorgeous and perfect! I have raise about at least two hundred silkie chicks, I do not vaccinate and I have not lost one to illness. I have lost two that didn't eat after they hatched. I've had three with wry neck and all recovered. I do not believe silkies are fragile other than the vaulted skull area. I know you took excellent care of your babies so something was unusually wrong with them. That is a shame... I have not had a high mortality rate with my Silkies. I dont vaccinate either but dont lose chicks for the most part except ones that have hatching problems.
