have a question those experinced silkie breeders please . I have 2 twoday old silkie chicks that are tipping there heads to right . I'm thinking wryneck (crooked neck ) I have the recipe for treating this . first off these came from very good breeding and have everything they need not to be culled . except now they are a little tipped on one side . My question -- has anyone seen this in this young a chick and has in one every treated one so young ? How did you break the meds down ( they don't weigh anything really )The treatment plan I have calls for 2.5 mg of Prednisone for a 2lb bird . I asked my vet but he really doesn't know or understand why I would go through the trouble for a chick . My self I hope all of you do or some anyway (1) I really hate to not try (2) I paid a great deal for eggs and as many know it is hard to get shipped eggs to hatch so when they do and it has all I want (toes and such ) I plan to do all I can to get it to the next stage . So if you have a suggestion please feel free to post here or pm me . Thank ~~~ Tammy

Tammy,

I have never dealt with this on ones so young. I wouldn't use the Prednisone just yet. You can take a one gallon jug and mix in some Poly-vi-sol drops (5) and one selenium tablet to that jug. This is then used as their drinking water. They do not need to be seperated from the rest at this point and the water mixture will not hurt the others. Don't take this the wrong way

but are you sure they are not just watching you? Can they walk forward or do they just back up?

Wry neck is an infection of the inner ear. It comes on slowly over a period of 2 weeks or so. Wry neck causes the aniamal to slowly develope a sideways head tilt, and it will eventually state rolling sideways over & over, unable to stand still. THERE IS NO WAY your 2 day old chicks have this. BUT silkies are prone to head injuries, especially chicks! The silkies with a head injury will tilt it's head chin down, and will tumble forward as it tucks it's head all the way down between it's legs.

Someone some where has misinformed the Silkie world that all silkies that hold their head wrong, have wry neck. It is a very uncommon thing in the animal world, but is mostly seen in rabbits when it does show up. But if you do have a head injurie in a silkie doing nothing, except helping them eat & drink, usually is all you need to do. You can give the poly & vitamins, it won't hurt, it may help them heal faster. I never give anything, and they heal just fine. The neuron connectors (not sure if that is the right wording there) needs time to heal, once they do. The bird, recovers, and appears normal. The only time you might notice anything, is when the birds are under stress, when older, they will tuck their heads under, just like when they were hurt. You can see this at shows, their will be a Silkie doing the Bobblehead, Snakey Head dance. Bobbi Porto & I have had a long conversation about this exact thing on the forum last year.

I had four Three Cedar eggs hatch and they all look similar to that and came out of blue/splash eggs so I'm gonna say yes
