Silkie thread!

I was so happy to find a silkie when I went to my local feed store. It was so fluffy and cute when it was a baby. I thought all silkies looked the same, except for different colors.

Now I know different since reading this thread and looking thru BYC. I realize now that my baby is just a hatchery chick and wont get as fluffy as most of the ones on here. I was really hoping for a big ball of fluff but I do love my little baby. I told my hubby that it just means that I def have to get more later.

I think it's adorable too. Though I can see your concern about it not fluffing up correctly. But don't be too worried yet. He's still little.

Sometimes you get this beautiful baby here. His parents were feed store stock as well.
And sometimes....

This strange and unusual boy. He was given to me and I'm trying to sell him because my white doesn't like him. But he's not nearly fluffy enough for me either. Pretty red color though. I think he comes from feed store stock too. And his butt fluff is that green/black iridescent color of an Australorp. He's definitely not from pure silkie stock. But he's just as sweet as he could be.

So sometimes feed store silkies are beautiful. It's the luck of the purchase on something like that.

I'm hoping she/he fluffs out more. But I am def wanting more anyways. I'm in love.

Lol. My daughters love his little poofy tail. I gotta get him some playmates cause he is still in brooder with my 2 gold comets and 1 black Australorp.

Hello Silkie people

I was wondering do hatchery stock silkies have 5 toes?

I am looking for silkies in my local feed stores "bantam assortment" (on the website for the hatchery it says silkies are part of it)

What are other ways I could tell a silkie from another bantam?

Yes they have 5 toes. Also you will see that their toes are black/blue, along with their skin. They will have crests, visible even as chicks.

Black feet/legs are probably the easiest way to pick them out. All of those little fluffballs kind of look the same!

Most of the banties I've seen have yellow or lighter colored legs/feet. This isn't the best picture, but the silkie leg/foot color is pretty distinct!
