Silkie thread!

it has shell still on its back. but it has white on its head a little and its belly is white.
I would guess light blue by the looks of this color, but I'm not sure how accurate the colors of the picture are..?

This is a splash chick. Is yours this light in color?

Anyone have tips for taming your birds? Mine aren't as friendly as what I would like them to be. I make sure to hold them all every day, hand feed treats/food/etc. Every time I pick one of them up they protest a lot, will settle down for a little bit, and then cry for their buddies. :( Even if I take two out at a time (and always within sight of the others), they still get upset.
I think what you're doing, will work. Just handle them as much as you can, as often as you can. Are they young birds?

Seems like I've been away for a few days Had a silkie we assume get injured fully collapsed couldn't pick up her head or move her legs twitching a bit, no vet would see us this was sunday. I did would I could and by the next day she recovered and we put together a coop just for her and the other silkie to help prevent further injuries. She was quarantined in case of disease but it was clear that it wasn't with a rapid recovery. My silkie coop only has two and my white silkie wasn't having the youngest of babies so I could do that she isn't the nicest with other birds sometimes. Sweet as can be to the other silkie and my Barred Rock. But my barred rock keeps order in the large coop and has to stay there.

Okay, but wouldn't the splash part depend on what color splash it is? I've heard of, seen, and own black splash as well as blue splash. Mind you, they're bantam cochins, but breed shouldn't matter. Genetics is genetics.

And also, can you make splash in other colors? Like if you breed it to red or buff?
There is nothing such as black splash, and for that matter, there really is no blue splash. Splash IS a bird with two copies of blue. There are people who refer to khaki as being dun splash, but in my experience it is not nearly as blotchy as is splash. Dun is an incompletely dominant gene, as is blue.

It happens. I have found the only way to truly hand tame a chick is to raise it alone. Icelynn is the calmest chicken probably ever and I raised her in the house over the winter. She had free range of the house most of the time and would sleep on the couch with me. If they have other chicken buddies, they will (usually) chose them over you.

btw Ice was 3 months when I got her, so they don't have to be baby babies.

Yeah. My big girls are about 5 weeks now, and my little girls are 2.
I think you'll do fine.

Good point, being the only chicken. They won't have the option of being friends with another chicken vs. you. lol

Aoxa - So then what you're saying is that splash is blue. No matter what. I guess I'm thinking that splash would be like the broken colors in rabbits. A broken black is black & white, a broken chocolate is chocolate & white, broken red, broken opal... Or like for hamsters a mottled blue is blue & white, So what you're saying is it isn't white mixed with another color? Guess that's how I was thinking. But - at any rate - here are pics of my bantam Cochins that I picked up on Saturday. 2 black splash, 1 blue splash. Just so you know what I'm talking about. To me, that isn't lighter & darker shades of blue, the 2 on the right are clearly black. Know what I mean?

The white you are seeing is juvenile feathering that will disappear as the bird grows mature plumage. The ones on the right are black. The one on the left may be splash, but it could simply be blue.

You'll never get a good looking (Show Quality) bird from a feed store. You get those from a reputable breeder.
I've sold some fairly decent birds to the feed store. Didn't make my cut, but might make someone else's, especially if they are simply looking for pretty birds and don;t care about those pesky details that we worry about in exhibition or breeder birds. But none of those were chicks, or even young birds. Most were at least close to mature.
