Silkie thread!

it might seem more frizzled in the pic but in person I thought I had 2 silkies and 1 sizzle. but who knows lol. I was somewhat hoping for non bearded because I like to see their eyes.

I prefer seeing their eyes too and I'm sure the birds are happier that way

I agree, and that's why I have a pen that I am trying to make really nice non-bearded Partridge Silkies. I think their faces are very intelligent - and any bird who figures out that they can see better by dunking their whole faces and heads in the water to wet down their beards and crests.. I think they like to see too!

Well the Silkies have a new fan. I had the Hubby helping me worm my flock. When I handed him one of my Silkies he just started rubbing and petting her. He said "This one feels just like a cat.". LOL

Yes, just one more reason to love them. That, and the fact that some actually DO like to be pet!
Is there a certain way to trim the bearded silkies faces so they can see better?
You aren't going to show them - so you can trim them however you like. You can trim them with nail clippers or those safety scissors (anything to keep sharp points away from eyes). Trim the feathers that go up towards their eyes - and you can trim the crest to remove those that go down below their head. The crest only blocks vision up, so you don't need to trim that if you don't want to. If you are lucky they won't have huge puffy faces - the Sizzle breed (Cochin in the mix) might not have double beard/muff genes so they may be partial instead of full.

As I said before - mine have figured out if they dribble water on their beards they can see better. Silly birds. The beardless ones don't do that - only the bearded ones.

Are non bearded silkies the ones that you can see their faces and the bearded ones are extra fluffy and have a hard time seeing? I think I under stand but I'm not quiet sure.
A quality non-bearded will have a large crest that hangs over the eyes but it's the cheek feathers in the breaded ones that are often a problem in blocking vision

I use baby nail scissors and trim cheeks and as much of the crest as I want. Even if you are showing, some birds need to be trimmed or plucked in order to see well enough to eat and drink.

Ok hopefully mine will stay calm enough to let me trim them :) I doubt these are show quality but I still love them. Just glad I got 3 instead of 1 :) they were very hyper and scared at first when I tried to hold them but I think they are getting use to me. I found that if I hold them close to my face at eye level and talk to them they just sit calmly in my palm. Kind of hoping some of my other chicks of a different breed will turn out to be roosters so I can keep all three of my silkies. Got more than I could keep to begin with.

Went to get to ad got 3!! :D my fort silkies. I fell in love with the breed. They are all show quality and the blue/splash and white were born Friday wile the porcelain was born the 18th of last month. Love them!! :D so happy
