Silkie thread!

This is my little 8-9 week old girl (I think girl, her crest was super round I cut it so she could see). Her name is Taco, I am a new chicken owner and she is my only Silkie all my other babies are an assortment of layer breeds. She's really laid back and still getting use to the flock. I don't know if she is show quality but I think she is pretty and the breeder who sold her to me said she is "breed" quality whatever that means.

She's gorgeous :)

What a beautiful wedding!
Thanks, It was a really pretty venue too. I was surprised. An old factory that used to make lace.
Booker and Ashes are finally with the white girls. He is very happy today. :) He still doesn't know what to do as a rooster, but he knows he likes girls.

Breed Quality means she has no defects that would disqualify her from a show, but she needs some work somewhere. She probably can be shown at smaller shows and place well, but would not do well at bigger chicken shows.

She certainly has the fluff required.... pretty!

The girls hatched out a little blue chick today! So exciting :) not the best pic but I didn't want to disturb them to much. Might have more tomorrow!

My silkie babies are around 3 weeks old and do not like me! I'm very upset, lately I have been working a lot and I'm exhausted by the time I get home, cook, clean, do laundry, and clean their cage. So I have put off holding them as much as I can. Will they grow up hating me if I don't spend as much time with them when they are little? Excuse my silly question I just feel like a week ago they all loved me and now they are terrified any time I put my hand in there. And when I hold them they try to fly away and never stay still. Any advice?

Three weeks is usually the spaz era - it can last until first egg. One way to combat that is to chop up a hard boiled egg and put your hands in there with the egg on it.. after they get over the initial "THE HAND" response some brave soul will come and peck at what they see.. and then the others will.. and pretty soon "THE HAND" will mean FOOD. Only problem is - sometimes the brains on the birds don't register the difference between fingers WITH food and fingers WITHOUT food. Most of my Silkies have figured it out - but a few of the SFH boys are still stupid.. ouch!

Quote: I have a slightly different definition--breeder quality birds have something that makes their genes worth passing on. They can have DQs, but other traits make them worth using. Maybe an incorrect comb or the wrong number of toes, but outstanding type or colour or ...

Also, it is kind of like garage sale items, one person's trash is another's treasure.
