Silkie thread!

How cold hardy are Silkies? This is my first winter having them. I also have a sizzle. Is there anything I need to do extra for it?

Silkies originate from the Himalayan region of China. They are quite cold tolerant so long as they are dry and have access to a draft-free coop. If they are very young, they might need added heat, but adults should be fine without it unless subjected to a sudden severe change.

I<3MyChickens,
If I were you, I would ask if they have the 5 toes and it fathered any chicks and what they were like. Ask if they are throwing off any 4 or 6 toes if they have. I thought that I got a bargain with a hen. She throws 50% 4 toes and I had one with 6 from another hen.

Very cold hardy. They are from Japan after all( or china, sources say both)

We got below 0 last year and mine were fine.

I found a rooster I was thinking about getting. He is free and I think he's pretty. Should I gt him? Belows ad and he is the splash silkie one

the splash one. I have a blue silkie hen.
I would not... He is lacking a lot of feathering on his feet and crest and has a lot of hard feathers, especially in his tail. Is your hen bearded or non bearded? If she is bearded she should be bred to another bearded, if she's non-bearded, bred to a non-bearded.

Twice I have found dead chicks in morning where they got beaks caught in mama hens bottom feathers. The last one was almost 3 weeks old. I gave the one hen a bath and conditionered her bottom. But, with weather change not sure good idea to do other one. Should I cut bottom feathers or chance the bath? Is this common?

I have lost 3 this way. I was told to pluck some of the feathers out from under the hen . But the last one was 3-4 weeks old, one of the roosters tail, ribbons was wrapped around its little neck. Another I had to cut away from its momma .
