Silkie thread!

Oh boy, are they cute! I love it when the broodies raise them. I can't wait to hatch out babies from mine next year!

Thanks for posting the pictures! I would like to see pictures of them as they grow up

Thanks! Hens and Roos are all together - so this batch was like a box of chocolates....not sure what you are going to get! I JUST got the last batch sold off. I wait until they are feathered out and don't need heat lamp and are independent (but pre "sexing"), and the last of my extra roos (which took forever)...so here I go again! I think I will keep the colors I do not have girls of (partridge) and grow them out hoping for girsl, and sell the chicks at about 8 weeks.

I was at a poultry show a couple of weeks ago and someone made a comment that silkies throw more "roos" . Has this been anyone elses experience? It certainly was when I hatched last spring and grew them out. I got 15 boys, 7 girls.....

When I got home last night Sassy was outside her nest box and she couldn't roll the egg out so it was still in the nest box And cold when I picked it up, my heart sunk. I thought for sure it was gone but hopeful I went ahead and stuck it under her and this morning it was hatched! And it's a partridge! My first partridge! So cute. Goes to show don't give up just because its cold!

Here's the only other baby I got, one of the juveniles got in and kicked the rest of the eggs around and killed them. A cute little Blue, I had to bring it in and clean pasty butt on it which is a first with a chick from the hens.

This is George Mihalik's pullet that a judge commented was perfect at the Tucson show several years ago.
Wow. What a gorgeous bird!

HI everyone. I am new to this thread. Hope someone can help me with a breeding question.

I have 7 white bearded silkies. A few were hatched from a pairing of a white show girl rooster over a partridge silkie. I have 7 total and I think 4 of that kind in the mix. The others I am quite sure are pure white bearded.

My question is: Even though they are white hens and will be paired with a white silkie rooster is it possible that I will end up with some show girls or even various colours of silkie due to the "grand parentage" ?

Hi and Welcome to the Silkie Thread!

No. If the birds you have do not have naked necks then they didn't get that gene - an you will not get any Showgirls. You may get birds with red ears or red combs/wattles from the grandparentage - but you will not get Showgirls. If it is there - it will show - if it doesn't show - its not there. And White and White always produce White. Only color in Silkies that is consistent. Cross out to any other color - and you will get your mixed colors.

in the Dna testing I've done with silkie babies I've found just about a 50 50 ratio of girls to boys however was talking to another breeder just yesterday saying out of 25 chicks she Dna sex tested she ONLY got 7 females!!! So I guess it just depends. I guess I've been lucky to get a 50 50 ratio. So I suppose it is possible they throw more males then females.. maybe I just got lucky with the 50 50 ratio. Seems like talking to others they DO get more males then female. I'm never buying straight run silkies! Id end up with all roosters for sure!!. I always DNA my babies now Before I buy them because I want only females.
