That is not always the case..I have a LF cochin that does not crow and if he does it is rarely and only a few times, I have a bantam Roo that crows all the time. My Americana Roo rarely crows. I find that it depends on the environment and other roos around. In all I have 5 roos, 2 bantams and 3 large fowl, I only hear the crowing in the AM and once in a while during the day. I am soory for your loss :-(

Hello and Welcome to BYC and Welcome to the Wonderful World of Silkies!

They do fine in cold weather - and those foot feathers are great snowshoes! They do not like to be WET though - so cold and wet is not good because the feathers do not shed water. If they have a place to stay dry they will do fine. Did you only get one Silkie?

Ya just the 1. She is bout a year old an very sweet. She follows my daughters around the yard an of course they treat her like a queen. Thanks for the info. I got nervous when I heard they don't do good in the cold because it can get pretty ugly here in ohio in the winter.

Thunderhead's my son's silkie. He says he just liked the name. The kids gave most of the chickens names and unusual names at that. The silkies and cochins are Tux, Tails, White Flame, Thunderhead, Jazz, Penguin, Cottonball, Mystery, Professor Fluffles, Doctor Puffles, Lou, Pinto and Mozzarella (Ella). The named LF are Henrietta, Lola, Mango, Ginger, Apple Juice, Orange Juice, Bender, Buttface (she's a bit of a jerk), Emily, Cheddar, Velveeta, Asiago, Parmesan, Limburger, Roger (female), Zebra, Tiger, Leia, and No Name.

Great names! My son named our female cat "Mr. Butt" when he was about 5 yrs old.

So, I've been feeding my birds the Poulin Grain gamebird starter/grower feed, 22% protein in crumble form. This was recommended by a Silkie & Cochin breeder.
My question is, is it a bad idea to keep my birds on this feed forever because it's a starter/grower?? I can't really see much of a difference on the ingredient labels on the feed bag with starter/grower vs. layer for example. Biggest difference seems to be the protein percentage??

Will it hurt my adult birds to stay on this feed and the soon to be adult juveniles?
No. When I have a lot of babies, everyone gets starter; it's simply easiest for me. I probably wouldn't want to regularly feed adults a higher protein than that, but you could easily cut the percentage by adding grains, fruits and veggies.

The larger the bird, the lower the pitch; the smaller the higher (more shrill). Also, larger birds tend to be louder than small ones. All that said, people tend to find the shriller crows more annoying than the louder, but lower pitched crows. How frequently a bird crows differs greatly on the individual bird and flock dynamics.
